Win M70 300 WSM

I have a Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow in 300 WSM  that I bought at Wally World about 10 years ago and I am thinking of putting some money into it and was hoping to get some opinions on whether it is worth doing or not. I know it's a cheapo gun so that's why I'm asking. Or should I look at some other factory rifles?

It currently has a Timney 3# trigger in it and I was thinking of taking it to Benchmark to put a fluted barrel and brake on it. So what contour barrel and twist rate would be recommended? I hand load and shoot factory rounds and am planning to shoot 180 grain bullets but might go a little heavier to see how those do.

One concern I have is I do not see many options for a stock. Any recommendations or places to check out for those options?

So is this worth doing or scrap the idea and look for something like the Browning X Bolt Hells Canyon that I've been reading about on the other threads? Or maybe a Tikka?

I would keep the action and timney trigger and scrap the rest. Have them true the action and build a fluted sporter contour barrel. For a stock you can get a Bell and Carlson, HS Precision, or Mcmillan depending on what you want and how much you want to spend. Or you can buy a Browning x bolt. Haha

Love my 300wsm.  I have a 26" 9 twist on mine and have shot both 212 eldx and 185 bergers (currently berger) very well.  Mine is on a rem700 action but I knkw Manners and a few others make solid stock options for the m70.

Any thoughts or opinions on these two stocks? Quality and function for hunting purposes. I am not finding much for the Model 70 in terms of options for stocks.

I think you should scrap it and get a 6.5 creedmoore.         Serious question, i know you have had it awhile and shoot it so how does it currently shoot? Any rwason other than you want to to throw money at it?

Already have one    My favorite rifle in the arsenal for a year now. But too heavy to lug around in the woods.

The M70 shoots ok. I can shoot inside a half dollar at 100 but have not shot out farther. Only reason I'm looking at throwing money at it is I want to build a rifle on that caliber and I already have the rifle. I'm certainly not committed to it though as I am much more a Remington fan which is why I am just researching right now. I do like the Browning and Tikka but have not shot them. Decisions Decisions.

Like others have said, that's a great platform.

Have you looked into the Bansner stocks? They make a lightweight stock for the Model 70. You can buy the blank and finish it yourself.

I've been looking into building a Model 70 Ultimate Shadow SS 30-06 or 300wsm with a Bansner stock in a blind magazine configuration.
