A few things I noticed,
He had a devil of a time setting that Newhouse :chuckle:
I noticed he had a sprung jump trap. I can relate to that.
It made my back hurt to watch him skin those beaver on the ground. I guess that was before they invented tables.  :dunno:
Beaver tags, we had those in WA too. I think most States had them. They cost a dollar when I first trapped and raised to $2 before they did away with them. You had to have them in possession when you caught a beaver. Two tags and three beaver you were in trouble but you couldn't get a refund on unused tags at the end of the season. :bash:
Also consider that everyone of those beaver was worth about a days pay, probably more for the black ones.
1967, I think that was the first year I trapped.

My Dad told about trapping mink after WWII. A large male was worth a weeks pay.
Ahh the good old days!

Have you ever seen a sled/boat with a power driven wheel like that? I can't imagine what that was like trying to steer going across the ice with a boat load of gear and beavers.
I guess for the money they could make a guy would figure any way he could to get to his traps.

I had heard talk about the black ones, but never seen one. I heard them referred to as Alaskan Blacks.   I have seen one blonde one in the wild when I was a kid.  Seems lots of taxidermy ones are blonde, but I think that is how the fur has faded or how it was treated, not the true color..
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

I have an old regulations booklet I found in my grandpa's fish and tackle box.  They used to give out in the 80s. The price is inside the booklet says for $5 deer tag and Beaver tags are $2. Its pretty cool I still have it.

Born2late, Here's a link to watch on "YouTube", if you want to see how they run on the ice.  (looks like fun!) Doug
