Turnbull elk

Looking at next season Turnbull elk hunts my son is going to college over at Cheney originally thinking of ghost pointing his elk permits for the next few years since time to come home and hunt is limited, he is a diehard Hunter and doesn't like the idea of lying dormant during elk season and Turnbull is a close option however he has 14 pts in all elk categories and doesn't want to blow them on a low success hunt either.  Any info or advice on this hunt option would be greatly appreciated thanks

I'd save the points and buy a few raffle tickets from CPWMA to hunt Turnbull. The elk are out there, but access and timing isn't ideal. If you're not in the right spot at the right time its a waste of points- especially for that many points.

If nothing else have him start putting in for the ML cow hunt, he may pull that tag before he graduates.  That’s a great hunt.

The cow tag can be a blast, I remember when I shot my cow a couple years ago, you literally could hear the roar from the football crowd at the EWU game, and heck it’s what 5-7 miles from town. Called my buddy to come help, who was at the game to come help. He was pretty primed if you know what I mean. Close to school, I’d put in for something in the blues first, although I did see some pigs in turnbull. Great time in Cheney. Also, time off will be your kids nemesis, elk season is typically not at a good time for school.

Time proven strategy right there!! How about PLAN on hunting da ho with your son and ADJUST if you are somehow “blessed” with a WA special permit...which is likely on par with many OTC hunts in Idaho.

How did your son get 14 points? Seems he was applying at a very young age unless he is a late starter for college.

He's only 19 but I started buying pts at a very young age in every category available has paid off and allowed for some really great hunts at a young age I would hate to see the new proposal pass that would not allow the option to buy points prior to passing hunters ed although he completed hunters ed at age 6 so he did get an early start I believe the opportunity to buy those points and keep the youth involved is priceless

The turnbull bull tag is pretty close to impossible to draw, I second the notion of building points for the cow tag and putting in for Blues or looking at OTC options in ID or MT.
