Tractor Supply Collects Persoanal Infor when buying BB Gun
« on: February 04, 2018, 01:54:18 PM »
We have a new Tractor Supply Store in our town and it is a nice one. Lots of neat stuff for people that live in suburbia. I notices an after Christmas Sale Display that had a few air rifles there. I found one that I thought might fit my smallest grandkids and it was just under $30.00. I always like having these around so that I can help these kids get started shooting. I had some other things to buy and then joined a long long line to pay for everything. When it was my turn, I was told that they needed to see my ID to buy the Pellet gun. I thought it strange but showed her my driver's license. I was taken back when she not only looked at it but put in my license number and birthday. I would have argued but it was already in the computer and there were so many people waiting. It seems to be a company policy. I WILL MAKE DARN SURE THAT I NEVER BUY ANYTHING LIKE THAT FROM THEM AGAIN.

Isn't it like purchasing smokes or booze, have to be a minimum of 18 or 21 and show proof?

They enter the info to show ID was checked and verified for their liability protection.

Big entities are viewed as easy targets with deep pockets in today's society and have to be constantly on guard...

That's not a state or federal regulation. You might ask to speak the manager and see why they have that policy. It may have been an ignorant clerk and not even company policy. :twocents:

dig a little deeper, WA does have regulations about BB guns on school grounds. Not relevant to this discussion though.  There are a lot of voluntary regulations though, which would apply here.  TSC seems to be voluntarily restricting sale to minors, and for taking the ID and information I would suspect it's for CYA liability.

I wouldn't by a BB gun there either, we have enough laws we don't need to support voluntary ones.

Keep an eye out for black helicopters. You're on the BB gun list now.

Had to actually go to the Lacey T.S.C. tonight to get some medication supplies for the horse, so I checked out their air rifle/BB guns.

There is a big, clearly displayed sign that says must be 18 and have ID to purchase, so clearly a company, CYA type thing...

Did they actually record your information?   Like your DL #?  I'd be looking further into this if so, it could be the clerk is collecting info for identity theft. Especially if you used a cc to pay.  Regardless of policy I never give me ID to a clerk. Only show it.  Having had an identity theft in the past, it isn't worth trusting a stranger with info they really don't need
