Cocker spaniels and hrc?
« on: February 10, 2018, 05:21:34 PM »
My wife is looking at getting a cocker spaniel in the next few years and would like to run hrc tests with me and my lab. I know there good in the upland field going after pheasants and suck but don’t know how they do in water after waterfowl? Anyone have any experience with them? Anyone see them run hrc test with labs? Thanks

I've seen a guy who runs hrc run started and also occasionally comes to whistling wings training day. Ive heard it's hard to find well bred field dogs. I think they are mostly his upland dogs that he wanted to retrieve as well.

I'm assuming an English cocker not an American cocker?...Loads of difference, but ECS still should be from hunting/field trial breeding.

In olden days, English cockers were separated from a litter of English springer spaniels by size and called cockers; thus the somewhat similar appearance in the two breeds. After proper water introduction, like springers, English cockers can do some mild weather, occasional water work, but their coat is not a cold water one and to a degree their size works against them, too. Also, being a high energy, upland dog calmness in a duck blind could be a challenge.

Yes it’ll be a English cocker spaniel. Honestly I didn’t even know there was a American and English cocker. But after reading up on them we she will get a English. While hunting it will be a upland bird dog I’ve got my lab to waterfowl duty. She was just wanting to run the hrc tests and train her own dog with me. It should be fun.

When the time comes and you are ready, there is a great breeder out of the Vancouver, WA. area.  She trains and handles her own.  I watched her put 3 Master Hunter titles on her dogs last year.  PM me if you want more information..

Cover Flush kennels out of Georgia turns out top notch field bred English cockers. Plenty of FTCs in their bloodlines. Please note, these are high energy dogs. Awesome loving pets, but they are full of PnV for sure! If you get a pup please be sure and post pics! Early and often...
