Have you read Steven Rinella's book American Buffalo? It's about his hunt in this same unit. It sound like it's a rough hunt, lots of private land owned by the Ahtna. It's a great read if you haven't done so. The hunt sounds like one of those things that's miserable while you do it but an amazing experience you will always remember fondly. I’m a non-resident now but was born and raised in AK. I put in party with my sister so with tags, air, etc the hunt will cost me about $5K. Not cheap by my standards but cheap as heck for this hunt!

I spent three full summers in the area back in the 80's. Geology from helicopters. Truth be told, I spent more time watching sheep than working. Anyway, my recommendation is to go early as you can to avoid the weather in Sept. Also, plan on going high on the ridges and staying there. Don't come back down at night. There are some HUGE rams there but they are nearly always on top. The topography is steep but the sheep trails along the ridges allow for easy movement. Biggest ram I ever saw was in the headwaters of the Tok river.

Thanks for the advice. Once I found out I drew I called 40 mile air almost immediately. Literally all of the headwaters were already booked. My guess is the guides lock those areas down with unwritten agreements with the air taxi services. I just thought it weird that headwaters of Tok River, Rumble Creek, West Fork of the Richardson and Dry Tok were all already reserved for air taxi by hunters. There’s only 40 tags for the entire TMA.

We are going to get flown into the Richardson and hunt the main drainage and hanging valleys along the main drainage. The goal of the trip for us is to spend some quality time and have a good chance at killing two rams.. Killing a 40” ram is not the priority for us on this trip so I’m not too upset about my first, second and third choice areas being spoken for 2 hours after draw results were announced.

You'll have a great time. If I was younger I would try for it. I always wanted to hunt them in the style of the high hunts here for blacktails. Lots of grizzlies in the lowlands. Easy to see though once you are above the trees.

I ordered the Steve Rinella book, I knew it was a tough hunt putting in for it. Have a good friend that knows people that got one last year on public land. Will try to make the most of this truly OIL
