A new (or old) commercial fishing method
« on: February 25, 2018, 10:29:15 AM »
https://www.nwcouncil.org/news/blog/pound-net-experiment-on-the-lower-columbia-december-2017-report/

The wild fish conservancy has been testing a fish trap on the Columbia for a few years. The results look very positive with survival rates of released fish well over 90% at McNary dam after being tagged at Cathlamet.

As ESA constrains our ability to harvest fish, old fishing methods may have to give way to more selective methods.  I wonder if the salmon industry will ever move to truly selective commercial harvest?

I meant to put this in fishing. Maybe a mod can move it?

Salmon farms are selective.  I'd like to see the inland farms, though.

Reef nets out in the islands are a much better solution than purse seines and gillnets as well, and are the Traditional method used out there.

The old fish wheels in the rivers could be selective as well I think.

The fish Wheels were deemed too effective and banned.  Yes they were pretty low mortality and selective.  This new net could be the revolution... If they allow it.

The traps do seem to be an efficient way to seperate harvestable fish from non keepers. Too efficient and who decides how many will be released upriver to terminal streams for sportspersons? And why can we not just seperate at Bonneville? We have all the fish confined in the races.
