Has anyone on here every bow hunted for carp? I have a 40-60 lb Hoyt that I was going to set up for carp fishing. Is 40 lbs to much? What system have you had good luck with on arrow retrieval. Any specific arrow? How many arrows do you really need? June is just around the corner and I've always wanted to try this.

Used to all the time when I was young. My bow at the time was around 45-50 If I recall. The arrows we used were very heavy, fiberglass I think. The broadheads had 2 heavy wires sticking back so the arrow couldn't come back through the fish. The line spool was simple, it attached on to the front of the bow with the line being a heavy braided fishing line. It was a blast. Some of the real big ones would tow our canoe around if not hit real good.

I used to years ago on the Columbia in the channel behind Cresent Bar, also in the shallows at Banks. Dont have the gear anymore though.

I get out at least twice a year. I have a old martin bow that I use. It is set at 45lbs. I use an AMS retrieving system (reel). I use their slide system for the arrow as well. I hit Moses Lake or the North Potholes.............just waiting for the spawning season.

My carp bow is a Proline Matchpoint set at 80 lbs. We shoot some big fish around here, sometimes prety deep, so I like a heavy hitting bow. lots of fun

Yeah i shoot a 70 pound bow with a AMS reel and line and a fiberglass arrow (i forget the brand). I also went to using Muzzy's Brand of Fish broad head. Its an awesome setup. Your going to have a lot of fun!!!

I have been bowfishing for about 7 years. I use a Martin JagMag set about 50 lbs with a high let-off, AMS retriever, and rest. I also use Aluminum covered fiberglass arrows (no slivers). It is a ton of fun, you can shoot until your arm falls off.

used to on the snake in Idaho below walcott what a blast we would laugh for hrs,mine was 60 lbs.

I have been wanting to try for a long time now!

We cant bow hunt carp out on roosevelt so i would have to try else where! Makes no sense why you cant out there!

I think I will set my bow at 50 pounds and get an AMS real system. The last week of June every year me and a Buddy go down to the snake small mouth fishing and we came across several spots this last year that had thousands of them. They where coming within feet of my boat. This is going to be a freakin blast.

Aluminum fish arrows? Do they break easy?

Do you guys have sights on your bows? 10,20,30 yards?

Shooting with no sights works best for me. My arrows are fiberglass and aluminum, so the are solid. Just remember aim low!

It is some of the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Moses Lake and the surrounding lakes, channels, locks are where we would go when I was in high school and college. There is a bow shop in Moses Lake that used to put on a derby every spring. They had great door prizes. I can't remember the name for the life of me though.

I guess it’s an acquired taste, when I was in Germany I got invited to Christmas dinner at my g-friend’s house, lo and behold the main course was steamed carp, the whole fish, I almost got sick but I just had to eat, the beer helped a lot; after that the old man loved me, we hunted and fished every time I had time off and he showed me how to cook from carp to snails.

Try this carp bowfishing!

I actually have a friend who's family is pretty well off, and he and his dad were nice enough to pay my way and go on this hunt/shoot whatever you want to call it with them! We actually went with Brackett Outdoors, the guys in the video. Man it was a blast!

I've yet to try bowfishing for the ones that don't jump out of the water, but I might have to try it out. Nothing like a nice day out on the water.

I've heard of alot of people eating deep fried carp too. You gut and scale the fish and then score it. Bread it thoroughly and deep fry it. Supposed to be pretty darn good. I'd try it at least.

I grew up in Moseslake, from 1954 to 1969. I am proud to say I have killed carp in most every way. fishing gear, bow and arrow, spear gun, dynamite, 30/06, 22 rifle. I have herded them, trapped them, netted them, Macheteed them. and snagged them

I love hunting the swamps, go in really early before the water roils up, stalk through the tules in 6 inch water, very quiet, bow and arrow or 22. nail them sitting and they never saw you.
stalk and nail them when they launch, very fast action, a bow is good, forget sights pure instinct shooting. Trap them at the spill way at the south end, use chicken wire and wooden frames in the spillways. once they are trapped dive in with a machette cut them up!!!
A guy fed them to his pigs, we killed hundreds a day this way.
Another fun way is stalk them like above but dont use fish arrows, wear cut offs and tennis shoes, stick a field arrow in them and "run them down in the shallow water" its a GAS!!!! stick them again or grab the arrow.
Of course some sissys use boats!!!!LOL

I used to go bowfishing with my cousin when I was living back home in Selah. We usually went to the white bluffs area just below Vernita brigde. Man there are some hogs down there.

Well I fished a tournie this weekend in Moses, the fricken carp were everywhere we even snagged a couple by accident with crankbaits. Know where I am going to whack some carp this year

Just make sure you have enough line! I went out with a friend of mine after work one day. He had a bowfishing outfit, but didn't have enough line left on the reel. (We found out later). We snuck up on some carp and he took about a 45 yard shot. Apparently the line was shorter than the shot, because the arrow stopped, then came back, turned around (point first) and went right between us at about head height. We both saw it, but it happened so fast, neither of us moved in time, it just happened to miss. Lesson learned. Looks like a lot of fun though!

I have found Bow hunting for carp a real fun past time when the fishing is slow. Here is one I called submarine just cause how it came out of the depths and its size. it might not look big but keep in mind My buddy Is 6'6"

You guys are going to laugh at this. I spent 6 years in England and believe it or not they have some fantastic fishing, HUGE pike and carp. The carp over there is like the largemouth bass or steelhead in stature to those folks. My first four years over there I only fished for pike, cause where I grew up carp are trash. What a shame, fishing for carp on light tackle with size 22 hooks is a HOOT. The fish get educated pretty quick over there because it's almost all catch and release so you get these 20, 30 and 40 pounders that fight like heck. I used to tell them we bow shoot those things over in the USA and they would cringe. There biggest fishing magazine over there is Carp World, I kid you not! I have seen them put lip balm on the carp's lip where the hook caught them and wade out into the water and cradle the fish until it was strong enough to swim off. Actually saw a guy land a carp without a net and several guys went over and threaten to kick his @$$ and throw him in if he ever did it again. Too funny! I used to take my kids to Banks Lake and catch 8 to 15 pounders all day long, they get the experince of fighting and landing big fish on light tackle, non-stop action and I never told them everyone else thinks these are trash. Kids LOVE catching carp.

I have done this for the last five years. Moses Lake has lots of carp. You can shoot until your arms fall off. 60 lbs is about perfect in my opinion. I use a Zebco 808 on a reel set that is screwed into the bow. Fantastic fun..

This is the best time to go right now.

Hello all,

I'm a long time viewer of this site but just had to chime in when I saw this thread. Bowfishing is definitely one the most fun and exciting things to do with your bow. Every year on Father's Day weekend there is a tournament held on Moses Lake. We usually end up with about 30-40 two man teams and take around 30,000lbs of carp out of the lake. It is a great bunch of guys that attend and always on of my favorite weekends of the year. If you guys are at all interested in bowfishing, you should check it out.

Sorry bear but I don't know anybody looking for a partner right now. Maybe contact the tourney director, John, he might be able to help you out. I hear ya on the bass boat....tourneys can get pretty slimy and bloody on the boat. We use an old carpeted boat and usually have to spend a few hours after the weekend trying to wash the carpet out. Hopefully next year we'll be stepping up to a boat a little more suitable for stinky ol' carp.
