Was chatting with a buddy last night about his plans as well as my plans for Montana this year. He was born and raised in Montana and farmed there for many years. His parents still live there and he was saying that his dad told him this is the worst winter he has seen since 1978-79. He has also talked to a lot of his buddies that still own and land and farm there and they all say how bad it is and how few critters they are seeing. I guess there was frozen rain a 6-8 weeks ago followed by a bunch of snow and cold weather. He sent me some links to current snow reports which are all breaking records. Starting to reconsider if we should make the trip this year or take the season off....

I have a buddy that live in NE MT and he said they have gotten heavy snow with temps in the -30's then a week later warm up and melt off. Then get heavy snow and be in the -30s then warm up and melt off. He he thinks winter kill will be normal. I've also heard SE MT has been a lot warmer with not much snow.

Snow in WY has been average.
CO is average to below average.

Probably double check your sources. Miles City south to Ashland has received several feet of snow since January. In addition, there have been a number of sub zero days.

Very concerned about where our Outfitting business is. Currently 70 plus inches of snow and sub zero temperatures. We are expecting heavy loses to our Upland Birds. They can handle heavy snow or sub zero temps, but combined it is tough..

The winter is not a good one, but I'm not getting any younger.

Had a buddy drive through there a week ago and said very little snow. Been told by a couple locals its been an average winter.

Every basin in MT is at least 100%, many at 120 and several regions over 150%. Overall, a very big snow year. Temps depend on the area, some got hammered pretty good.

That is the reports I am getting directly from farmers there. They are saying that the deer are getting pushed down way lower than normal to the coulees and even there, its tough to find food and they are seeing the coyotes and other predators have easy pickings

Eastern MT has seen lots of snow and then lots of warm temps. Plus there isn't many basins in E MT. Or what at least I think of as E MT. I guess it depends on where you're talking about.

Wasn't bad until February, than winter really seemed to set in. It's not looking to let up anytime soon either, lots of cold weather and snow forecasted for the next two weeks. But I wouldn't let that keep you from hunting here this year

That's a bummer that winter is hitting them so late and hard over there. I am going to apply for the first time for a deer tag anyway. I am willing to bet even with some winter kill, the hunting will still be better than I have ever experienced here in Washington!

I agree, sucks they’re getting hit hard late, but I just applied for my first MT deer tag last night. I hear so many good things and my job never afforded me enough time to head over until now. Really looking forward to it!

Montana is a huge state, as big as two or three smaller states, as a result part of the state can get slammed and other parts not so bad. The previous winter hit us hard where I usually hunt, we had to go to a different part of Montana and leased another ranch that wasn't harmed, it still had lots of deer. Two days ago I was talking to one of my guides who lives in Bozeman and he said he was looking at about 60 whitetail in the field behind his house and almost no snow on the ground. He didn't think the winter was doing any damage in that area.

I think it's been not too bad so far in southwestern WY. January was the second mildest on record for northern Utah. Feb has been more like a normal winter. I think the biggest determiner is was the weather does in march and early April. I'm not sure what the weather has been like in eastern WY?

Or blow away next week ha ha I lived up there for a few years I think it snows once and then just gets blown back and forth between there and North Dakota or the chinook winds come in and it melts the next day and you think it’s spring Montana hunting will be fine but to be safe y’all better not put in
