We went to the one on the 28th, took two people who had never hunted before and by the end of it they had learned a good amount..If your looking to get into turkey hunting its worth the drive down..plus you always need some reason to go to Cabelas

Any more info on the calling contest. Is it a contest for pros? I'm just asking because I've never competed before and don't want to go get my ass kicked in front of a bunch of pros.

I read the announcement tonight at Cabelas but don't recall what it said about the contest.  For some reason I thought it was a youth contest.   :dunno:  The Gig Harbor guys can answer it though.

I recommend going because Al Prante and the rest of the guys do a great job!

THe calling contest is open to any and everybody, but I dont think there will be any "Pros" there. I know there are a lot of good callers in the state who might not think they can compete in a contest, but you'd be very surprised how well you can compare to others.  You never know, you might just walk away with a prize.
There are two contests, one for youth with three different calls. THe other is for adults, and it will be with five types of calls. The judges are going to be guys from the Gig Harbor NWTF chapter, and they will be hidden inside a tent during the judging.

I'm not privy to the procedings of a contest? I've watched them before, but do you have to use five different calls or is that an option.

No it is open to everyone and not a sanctioned event for the NWTF we're doing it just to get folks to come have fun and possibly make it an eventin years to come, that can be sanctioned. I went through that same fear as you..and I actually won the state one a couple years back. Later on in the mail I got the offical invite to go back to Nationals....Wow I was shocked to be invited to an event with the Likes of a Parrot, stolz, Pittman...what a rush, I never did go due to money reasons. But beleive me to go from that to where my calling came from was a great compliment. So come down join us and have a blast....you'll like it My 7 year old daughter even does it.

Only one I know of - Washington State NWTF Chapter Calling Contest (Sanctioned) on July 18th at Camp Delaney at Sun Lakes Park.  Will post when more is know (probably sometime in June).

I never was in it to win a calling contest as I just wanted to be good enough to get turkeys in close (if having them land on my boots, having their heads at my left pocket, yearly having them close enough to slap them ... then I guess I reached my goal). I do it for the fun of it only, and it has made me a better caller (surprising what you can learn) ... and every now and then you'll win some nice prizes too. I had never seen a contest when I was pushed into to it by my Gig Harbor (and the Tacoma) Chapter members during the State Summer Meeting after my 1st year of turkey hunting (finished 3rd in state). This last summer was the lowest I've placed (4th) after finishing 2nd in 2007.  We have a lot of really good callers in this state, but qualified judges are a bit hard to find and it is all subjective to each judges ear> So where you think you did horrible, you'll finish high ... and when you think you just rocked the world, you might finish out of the money ("On any given Sunday") ... so always do it for the fun and experience, don't worry about winning (that will take care of it's self) ... if you don't, it will probably just drive you nuts.

Thanks for the insights. I said when I first picked up a call that I wanted to call in at least one contest, just to do it. I don't think I'll place, which is tough to swallow for anyone with a competitive nature (like me), but it will be a good experience.

I've always been competitive too, but as I've gotten older I realized that not even the greatest in any sport will win  them all (ask Michael Jordon for example) and dynasties do come and go. You also learn to be a lot more humble when a critter with a brain the size of a walnut outsmarts you (too many times).  I now actually like watching new blood win the contests, my family or friends experience the excitement of their first (or subsequent)  harvests, etc. Don't get me wrong though, I still get excited when I punch my ticket or bird -- just not as important --- I don't have to finish first, get the biggest rack or fish, etc.  It's more about the pursuit and the sharing of the experiences with the old and new people in my life that I increasing enjoy ! If i could, I'ld like to take every new turkey hunter with me for at least for a day ... but since that's totally impossible, I try to take my chapter members that haven't harvested a bird out as a thank you for being a volunteer. Enough of them have become good hunters (like brewzer13) that they are now taking newer members with them ... and I am really excited to see them "paying it forward" too !  My chapter members have not only become friends, they have become family !  Great guys with big hearts that constantly show their caring natures for those around them ... that's what makes a "legacy" that will outlive everyone of us.

Added note to all. We will be there all day from 8 till 6, and will be more than happy to answer questions and give tips or just trade stories. I for one am always interested in hearing from others, and learning from them as well. I dont care how long you have been hunting or how good you are, you can always learn something new from ever person you come in contact with.

Thanks guys for putting that contest on. I had a blast. Great to meet new people, test out your calling. I wish now that I would have looked at the numbers more closely to see what my lower scores were, probably my cutting and kee kee, but I'm not sure. Anyways, it was fun and hopefully that can become a yearly gig.

Missed the seminar...got there at 11:20.  Hung around for about an hour shopping and ran into an old friend.  Was going to stop and visit over at the table, but ran out of time and had to leave.  Lot of things going on yesterday....who all entered the contest from the board?  Who was there from the Federation working the table?

Sorry I missed you ... The table, calling contest judges, etc were all my Narrows Strut Busters chapter guys (I may be prejudiced, but they are the states best volunteers) ... TN was there and amongst the contest callers (placed 3rd ... must say, there are some excellant callers in the state).  I believe I met your son when scouting shortly before my first turkey hunt (believe he was a state chapter officer at the time) ... after talking with him that day, I joined the NWTF. Got to me Turkey Man, too. Lot of good people amongst this state's turkey hunters.  Kind of gives one some hope for the future of the sport ....

Sorry I forgot to mention FH ... the top 4 positions were separated by just a few points as it was (8 to 10) ... all very excellent callers ... it was a little noisy between the overhead vent fan, the constant annoucements, and the customers ... probably moving to an outside tent for next year so we can enjoy hiway and parking lot noises instead. Although I didn't get to  call myself, it was fun MC'ing and listening to the quality of the callers. I'm sure glad I didn't have to judge this one.

Yes it was great to meet fishhunt and turkeyman and I thought Fh247 maybe a ringer the way he called ;) I was honored to be with some callers like that yet lucky enough to place. With the scores the way they were the very next week it would still be a toss up. I hope this is the good start to maintain this type of thing here. I truly feel that things like this will help get more and more support and activity from us all around to make turkey hunting as much a traditon as anywhere else. If we can't do it through traps, then there's more than one way to skin a cat.

TD had to buy Callie some mouth calls that day and I don't think she even takes them out at dinner ;)  SO I hope Everyone that called Saturday and thos yet to come, come on out to our Summer Banquet and do this again....that one will be sanctioned and a chance to go to Nationals. Turkey dancer and myself will have more and more info on that one as it nears.

Great time and great people i hope to have this event every year. It was nice to see some new blood involved with the NWTF and nice to see some new callers. I have been out of the calling contest for 8 years it was always the same 5 to 7 callers got old after awhile. Now that there is some new blood i will start to call in contest more often.

The Summer Convention is Fri afternoon july 17th thru Sunday morning July 19th at Camp Delaney @ Sun Lakes State north of Ephrata and Soap Lake (or just south of Coulle City and just off of Hiway 17). Calling contest will most likely be Sat afternoon July 18th after our meeting with our "banquet" that evening. Nice to meet FH &TM as well as the other callers.

Guess I should practice up a might ... you guys are just to good ... you're likely to cause a turkey stampede!

The adult contest was a good time but I think the kids we had did great as well. I thought that was tougher to judge then I imagined it to be. Congratulations to the brothers that took first and third. I know I am biased but if you were there, you saw some kids giving it a great effort. I know my two kids could have done better if Dad knew the rules would have allowed them to use any call :bash:... But for a 6 and 9 year old with diaphragm calls I thought they did fantastic! They are proud to be 2nd and 4th! I will have a great time with them in the field in the future. I would like to thank all who participated young and old, the first contest I have ever seen and it was very impressive. Great job guys...and Amanda

I know I was proud of the kids too ... course Great Uncle "Dancer" is always proud of your two kids Birdman (you're doing really good by those two). Sorry it wasn't clear, but it will pay dividends in the future as good as they were sounding.

All of the youths were impressive, but I have to note that the blonde young man that called with a diaphram was exceptional. Was he 5 or 6, does anyone know? He will be a force to reckon with when he gets in high school if he sticks with it. And his smile after he called everytime...unforgettable. If that is anyone's son on here, tell him his calling is Excellent and keep at it.

Birdman's 6 year old son Brett ... his daughter Amanda was also a caller, as was Tom Tamers daughter Callie.  All great kids and the future of the organization ...

Thanks Fishhunt that is my son. He is 6 and has been calling on and off for a few months, but really started to get after it in the last week or so be for the contest. He is into absolutely everything so it will be fun to see what he makes time for as he gets older. Right now it is cub scouts, baseball, 4H, fishing with Dad and Grandpa, shooting ANYTHING :mgun:, hunting ANYTHING, helping train the new pup and all other things little boys do, before crashing to sleep every night. He just read your post and thought that was pretty cool for you to say that about him :whoo:. He said "WOW" can we show Mom :IBCOOL:? Those are his favorite icons he had me add to me reply.
He and his siter are working at it and will get better. I hope to get them out to call a bit this spring but baseball will make it tough.

Ya he was great and it cost me $14 bucks  Callie wouldn't leave til we got her some mouth calls....Can't beleive I was ever making that gawd awful racket once too....but after a week there are some resemblence of a turkey in her calling, lot faster than her Dad was ;) Birdguy, you going to bring them over to the summer gig....we had  a youth calling event last year and two years ago callie got up in front of everyone and called during the adult contest....brave little varmints aren't they :)
