.30 Cal Bullet Line-Up... for you Longrangers
« on: March 11, 2009, 08:36:21 PM »
So... in response to the 'long range loads and penetration' post... I thought I'd throw this picture up that shows a few of the bullets in question. It's pretty easy to see why the Berger and the A-Max are soooooo much slicker in the air than any of the others (except the 240). The BIG Sierra 240 Match King BC is around .700... and it hits HARD, it's like shooting a football... I can't imagine how big one of those 300 grain .338 bullets are that the guys are using for super long range work.

Anyway... I thought it was a good sample of .30 bullets. I've shot all of these out of the .300 RUM, so if anyone wants data on them... just let me know.

One thing I have noticed about sierra match kings is the copper seems to be a little harder. They don't seem to open up very well when they slow at long range. I don't know the speed they work best at, but I believe the nosler will open down to 1100 fps.

That 210 is sexy, definitely the bullet of choice in the Ultra.....My new project is a 28" ABS carbon barreled 7stw throated for the 180 VLD's.

jj I love those 7mm/180 Bergers... those things look like some kind of ballistic WMD. I'm thinking a case full of Retumbo ought to work well for you in the 7STW... something as slow as US869 might work well too. The 210 is by far my favorite bullet for the .300 RUM, I like the Amax too... it just doesn't quite shoot as well out of my rifle. I haven't shot any critters with the 240 Sierra... but I know it hits the steel way harder at 600 than any of the other bullets I've shot. I ran the numbers one day... and if I recall correctly, the 210 Berger hits about as hard at 600 yards as the .308 running a 165 at the muzzle. I think that'll be ok for deer...

That 240 is incredible...I am not man enough to shoot a big .30 pushing that bad-boy.   Even my little 300 WM with the 168's gives me a little kiss when I touch her off   :chuckle:

That's just what I had on hand... I don't know that I'd ever shoot the 220 SMK. It gets dominated by the Berger and the Amax ballistically... and both those bullets have a pretty good track record on game.
