best pack pistol?
« on: March 11, 2009, 07:51:32 AM »
Whats the opinion on the best lightweight pistol for packing on archery hunts. Now that it is legal in our state I am thinking of getting one but don't really like to add much weight to my load. It may just go in my pack at times but would be nice to have for a chance encounter with a bear cougar or wolf. Defenitely stainless or titanium and thinking 357 but no semiauto. nwhunter

I carry a smith model 60 with a 3" barrel and adj. sights pretty good balance of power and portability. Its small enough to carry right in your hip pocket. but with the longer barrel and adj. sights its fairly easy to hit with.

If I do...it will be my Ruger BlackHawk 4-5/8 in .45 Colt.  With a 250 grain Keith at 1100 fps that will put paid to any critter that is a problem.

taurus titanium .357

It's got the 6" barrel and it's accurate as well as VERY light to carry.

I have a 4" 41 Mag in the same gun.  Got it specifically for the purpose you're asking about.  Not claiming it's the best wheel gun ever made but the titanium trackers are a heck of a gun for packing.  I believe Smith has a titatium 44 now too.

I have the Ti Tracker in 45acp.
Light, weatherproof, accurate.
4" barrel is optimum for open carry.
5 rounds of 45 acp is good to go.
BTW, some of the Ti Trackers are ported, some are not.
This influenced my decision (ports are LOUD)

my go to gun for years was the samething with the 7 1\2 barrel great gun. I will someday own one with the 4 5/8" for outdoor carry I think your about as well armed as a man can be.
