Sherman spring bear

Congrats on the draw! 2015 the bears were out and about in the end of April. Filled my tag the 18th of May.

I also drew  the Sherman tag  for my first spring bear hunt,  l haven't spent anytime hunting for anything in the spring but the one thing l have heard is to watch out for ticks. So are the ticks going to be a problem? and if so what can be done to counter them?

boy are you in for a treat. yeah, the ticks are a problem...

For ticks, buy some permithrin and apply it to all your clothes, socks, packs and hats.  The stuff works!

Permethrin will kill ticks after a few moments of contact. Use a spray with deet as a secondary defense and you will be good... just be certain to check yourself closely. Check up under your “sack” too... had a buddy get one there and didn’t find it for a while. His wife took heat and tweezers to try and get it, but was unsuccessful. Doctor was able to get it, and that sucker was the size of a pinky nail. So seriously, check all your body every time you are out. Even with these chemicals added.

I picked one up behind the ear and my wife went into a full blown panic attack! Needless to say she doesn’t run her fingers through my hair anymore    I must have pulled a dozen ticks off my clothes definitely thick over there!

don't worry about the ticks you'll be fine without spraying all that crap on yourself.

I also checked the Snotel website for Washington, and checked the sentinal butte station, when we had Sherman tags last year.  Its at 5,000 feet or so if I remember correctly.  That being said, we killed our bears down low, probably in the 2,800 foot range and never went real high.  We went for four days over Memorial weekend last year and the weather was in the 80's so we hunted low in timber and found bears.  You will have a good time!
