Testing Releases
« on: March 26, 2018, 10:48:35 AM »
I'm thinking about picking up a handheld release, but I don't have much experience with them.  Does anyone know of an archery shop or range that has a few back tension/ hinge releases you can try before you buy?  I see a lot of catch and release on other forums and don't want to drop $200 on a hinge that I won't end up liking.

Never heard of a range letting you try them out.  Probably because you have to tinker with them to get them set up to your bow, poundage, etc.

I've had luck three ways-
1) Shooting with a group of buddies and try theirs'.  Note - it is best to have at least one of your buddies be the "gotta have the next new thing guy"
2) Going to a range and shooting.  Chatting with folks and asking to try theirs out.
3) Pony up the $200 - try it - if you don't like it sell it for $150 6 months later.  $9 per month rental fee to try it out.  May just be how I justify in my mind but works either way.

I will say from my testing this last year just trying them once or a couple shots did not give me the full picture of how I shot a release.  I will likely continue to opt for the buy high / sell low and it is what is.  On the flip side you can buy someone else's used one and lower your monthly rental fee.

I'm looking for a thumb release too. Going to a shop soon to try them out. If they say no to the tryout idea then I'll move on. Some shoo out here must be willing to let you test drive. If the shops don't then I'll be forced to buy online. Something a shop owner doesn't want to hear.

If you have Amazon Prime, you can order a few, try them out, return them, and buy the one you like locally.

I have a lot of hinge, back tension ,Thumb style releases in my shop. I also have a Genesis bow and a safe draw available so you don't shoot your arrows thru the wall. All of my releases are Carter Releases. I can get any release fast from them if you decide which way to go. Give me a call .I live in Roy. Not too far from you..

Just try some Carters before anything else. About the only release I will shoot, their quality is a step above other companies.

I use this one, had it for a long time.  Actually bought two because I lost one during an elk hunt...so keep that in mind, they're easy to loose!

I like the calipers, you can let go of the release and leave it on your D loop for a second if you gotta pick your nose or something.  Usually keep it in my front pocket, comes out quickly, clips on quickly and shoots well for hunting.  I'd use a hook for target though.

I might upgrade to a tru fire edge to see if the trigger is less clunky than the truball..

meh, I just like hand held calipers.

This might be the best of both worlds, hook style but still captive, don't like how he's punching the "trigger" though  :chuckle:
