Crash course on calling in cougars
« on: September 06, 2018, 01:04:20 PM »
Spotted a cougar last week
Dad saw one 500yards from same spot.
It's normal for us to see one in that canyon. Going there for a week. Any advice?

@gramps
He does a fair amount of calling and has had some success, he may have a tip or two.

I have had them come in to a fawn in distress a few times with my e caller.Give them something to look at as well a fawn decoy of some kind.Anything that will catch the cats eyes and keep it from looking around away from the decoy and finding you.

A cougar will sometimes watch for an hour or so before coming in sometimes the will come right in.

Yes to Oh Mah's comments.

I have used deer distress combined with cougar whistle sounds and I have had luck with kid goat distress sounds.  I don't think it matters too much which animal in distress one uses as long as the sound denotes a critter in distress.  I have used bird distress sounds also. Cats hunt with their eyes and will, as mentioned, sit and search for the source of the sound. I have  been busted on two occasions when I saw the cat and it picked up my movement and was gone.

Find a spot that provides some visibility and give it a try.
It never changes, but it is always different.
