According to WDF&wolves, from 2016 to 2017 WA's wolf population grew by 7 wolves...

AgWatch | Wolfpacks grow, but sticking close to home

"The state Department of Fish and Wildlife say the state’s wolf population climbed from 115 in 2016 to 122 in 2017, but they’re concentrated in the Ferry, Okanogan, Pend Oreille and Stevens counties in northeast part of the state rather than spreading out. According to a report in the March 30 Capital Press, that’s a problem.”

Maletzke emphasized the surveys represent "minimum counts" of wolves in Washington state, due to the difficulty of accounting for every animal – especially lone wolves without a pack.

WDFW minimum count is utter stupidity. which reminds me of the many wolf predations on livestock where WDF&wolves lied to our faces, they knew we knew they were lying, and they continued with their lies. Just like the year they estimated WA's wolves grew by one wolf, these estimates are in your face lies.

And as WDFW taunt hunters, ranchers etc. with their corruption, WA's wildlife is being slaughtered by protected predators.

They spend $425,000.00 on some twit to tell us to shut up and suck it up but don't have funds for an accurate count?

@jstone the answer on average is 5-6 pups with more a possibility. But with higher birth rate comes a higher mortality rate. The average for that is still 50% so 14 breeding pairs should come out to an average of 70 offspring, with survival on average of 35 offspring. Now most of those studies are done in areas where Lynx and other animals will actually target wolf pups. Not sure if cats have started doing that here. So I wouldn’t be surprised if mortality rate is marginally lower and more pups are surviving here in Washington.

Just sickening the waste of money and waste of our wildlife resources, our treasured moose herd is being turned into wolf scat.  :bash:

 :yeah::bash:
Absolutely mind boggling how much the moose population is declining.

Throw in wolves killing wolves, mange, distemper and parvo, the surviving # probably about 30%, doubling every third year and filling voids.  The WDFW official # is a sad situation.

You know what, talk about a government agency that needs to be investigated!  Something is really stinking here and has been since they became the WDFW. We really do need a Fish and Game dept. to take care of our FISH AND GAME... :twocents:

Yep, looking back to what we have now, WDFW is just another fake environmental group.

We watched some home movies of the 50's in the Methow this weekend, ranchers feeding deer in the winter, herds of spring deer, 300 plus in the alfalfa fields. Back then it was the "game department" now thanks to the corrupt WDFW with their protection of predators and massive tag output those days are over.

We had those numbers in the 70's,  until the massive Doe hunts were allowed.  Oh ya, they claimed it was only going to be a 3 year program to bring the numbers down!!   The 3 point or better Gardner Unit was only suppose to last 6 years! Its was suppose to become the "states" premiere Mule deer trophy unit!!

Don't ya just love it when a plan comes together!!!

Interesting names show up Wolfbait.

Ben Maletzke was at one time working with WSU as the large carnivore research Bio. in around 2010. Now he's a specialist for the WDFW.

How can it only be 30% expansion when the study outside of Denali stated 70% harvest by hunters was necessary to hold populations constant?

I have told many stories on here about the "Game dept." of old, I remember many trips as a kid pulling into the Game dept. compound with my dad and loading a thousand pounds of pellets into our truck and heading out to where ever they sent us to feed deer. I know I sound like a broken record but at least in the Methow(pre WDFW days) that mule deer herd in the valley was put on a pedestal, watched over and taken care. They were the Game Department and putting forth a "quality product"( for a lack of better words) for hunters and sportsmen was job number 1. Back then hunters and fisherman pumped a lot of money into the valley because of great hunting and fishing, this was important to the local economy because the average tourist had not yet discovered the Methow, heck, there was an old 2 pump gas station where the ice cream parlor is now :chuckle: Then the North cascade pass opened, more people discovered the valley, more people moved to the valley and some of those people who discovered and even moved there had different ideas about hunting. Then a little ways down the road the Game department became WDFW and things started to change in negative ways for the hunter. The WDFW (as I,ve said before) have way to many irons in the fire, too many special interest groups to cater to and have lost the trust of a lot of hunters, fishermen and sportsmen because of some of their activities and statements. Questions are being asked if the WDFW really have the best interest of our game herds at heart, why isn't more being done to preserve and grow hunting opportunities in our state or why arnt our game herds being taken care of the way they were pre WDFW. IMHO, thats what the Game department tried to do and could possibly do again and why we as hunters need a GAME DEPARTMENT to watch out for our best interests as hunters, an agency who is not being pulled in 20 different directions and often has to cater to different groups that are in direct conflict or negatively effect other groups. Was the Game dept. of old perfect? heck no but at least they didn't have all those irons in the fire, and yes, some of those irons are not good for our game herds! IMHO thats why we need a separate Fish and Game department, an agency that will actually represent and watch over our fisheries, game animals, fishermen and hunters.... :twocents:

I think it was in 2011 that WSU, CNW and WDFW were doing a study as to the impact of wolves on the mule deer in the Methow, they were walking through wolf killed deer to net and collar deer.  A friend and I talk to them, they said there was only two or three wolves in the lookout pack, and we showed them pictures of eight different wolves we had seen in the last two weeks. That was the same time that CNW said that fitkin knew of the other wolf pack up in Bridge Cr, but that it was to expensive to confirm.

I don't think we ever heard what the study said, but that winter the wolves were slaughtering the hell out of deer form Mazama to Black Canyon, we know as we hike into many kills, along with some cougar kills that wolves drove the cougars off of.

Now here we are seven years later, in the same spot with WDFW etc. continuing to lie to the people of WA.

Interesting, in nearly a decade on here you have never posted a picture of a wolf...one coyote, but never a wolf.  I would have guessed that you would share your wolf pics with this group, if you had any...
