Had a "First" today with a AR10.
« on: April 01, 2018, 07:21:17 PM »
I've shot and built allot of AR15's and AR10's over the years but this was a first for me. I was shooting my 6.5 Creedmoor at 600 yards (Lots of wind today/Serious wind). I was shooting from the prone, I was about 40 rounds into it and the bipod and rear bag were set up great, with the muzzle brake recoil was light and straight back. The adjustable gas block helped allot with that. I loaded my 5th 10 round Mag and the first round felt odd, the recoil impulse wasn't the same. I noticed it right away, just the slightest "Hop" to it.

I went ahead and fired the Mag and then looking the rifle over. Seeing if anything was loose, I pulled the rear take down pin and broke it open and my buffer launched like the Apollo moon shot! The buffer detent nipple had sheared off. It was a quick five minute fix, I keep a spare parts kit, less the trigger and a spare firing pin in the but stock compartment.

An honest question for you.  When you noticed a misfire (my words, not yours, perhaps you didn't feel this way), why did you continue to fire?

I have been in that situation before (controlled fire, not combat).  I stopped.  But please tell me your thoughts.

I didn't see where it said misfire but I always blame the first misfire on the ammo and only after repeated do I start looking at the rifle.

It was probably caused by all that raw power the Creedmoor has. It just couldn't be contained by mere steel.  :chuckle:

The buffer hammering into the pin is the normal cause of that; if everything is correct the buffer should not touch the pin when the rifle is assembled.

Could be the bolt carrier is a little short, barrel extension is short, or the front of the receiver is a little too long. Or the pin hole in the lower could be too far rearward. Any of those could cause that problem.

I have never seen that, I knew the buffer "should not" touch the pin, thanks for the possible causes.

Hammer, were you able to diagnose this?
