Dodge 3.0 Liter diesel in pickup
«
on:
April 03, 2018, 05:52:56 PM »
So, I'm starting to look at new 1/2 ton trucks and see that Dodge now offers a diesel in their 1/2 ton.
It caught my attention.
Anybody know of a good/unbiased place or forum I can read about this engine?
Thanks,
Dan

Only heard good things about them. Gas mileage is apparently amazing

I would not consider it. They have enough problems with them that replacement engines are backordered. Further, the cost difference between gas and diesel trucks is almost 7k, which buys a lot more fuel. Reliability with any newer diesel is not as good as a gas motor. They require DEF and more expensive long-term maint. I'm not brand bashing here they all have quirks.
The reason to buy a diesel is heavy towing performance. The math really doesn't pencil out on a half ton unless you keep it a LONG time and even then you will be in the shop a lot more than a gas 1/2 ton.

Just another V diesel to me. Today's diesels are so restricted its hard to justify them. More power, more efficient, less maintenance and better longevity were the reasons the diesels existed and the reason other countries still put them in everything. The US has been slowly killing the diesel the last decade. If you want to have a good diesel you have to go back about ten years or buy new and start pullin crap off until you are a criminal.
That said, the new Dmax I4 they're putting in the Colorado's is pretty cool, just too pricey.

I know of a couple people who have them and like them, but haven't talked with them much about them. After driving the Ecoboost in comparison to the Silverado I had made my mind up and had no interest in driving anything else.

That 3.0 diesel was around a few years back in the Sprinter vans and the diesel Grand Cherokee. Both of them had an oil leak issue that would leak oil into the EGR valve and ruin it. Big bucks to fix it. I'm not sure if it's a different design now, but that was a thing a while back with them. I don't know much about them these days. I can reach out to a couple Dodge guys I used to work with and see where they're at with them.

Haven't they been putting this same motor in the Ram 1500 since about 2014? Has it gone through many changes or is it still pretty much the same since then?
I remember talking to a guy that had one a few years ago and he said it got great mileage, I want to say he told me something like mid 20's MPG, but was a little soft on power if he was using it for much towing.

Thank you all for the replies.
I hit some of the forums and am now sufficiently
afraid of this engine.

I don’t know if it’s the engine or the drives, but all the ones I’ve been behind trying to get on the freeway have been molasses slow.

It doesn't seem like the price for a half ton Dodge with the diesel is different form the gas V-8.......
It sure seems like a nice deal to get the mileage.

Have 95k on mine love it. Two buddys same. Tows 8500 ok. 26 mpg stock, 24-25 with duratraks and leveling kit. They did have to switch from euro 5-30 to rotella 10-40 due to oil issues. Will get another

I read somewhere that Chev was gonna sell the 2019 with a 3 liter diesel in the 1500. I have no idea what kind.
