Bait
« on: November 09, 2017, 10:42:27 AM »
What's everyone using for bait this time of year? I put out some mineral salts and having some activity.  With the colder weather is going to grains going to work better? Apples are still good for now.  Just curious hiw the diet changes and what people feed in the early season vs the late season.

I haven't had trail cameras out in a couple years now, but I did use a lot of minerals back when. I found on the eastside, mineral interest waned when antler growth stopped.  Also found not nearly as much interest in minerals on the westside. And pumpkins are great bait. The deer love them.

hay and alfalfa this time of year, especially on the westside. Apples, pears and other fruit works well for deer too

Yeah Apples are still good and pumpkins for sure.

I picked up a bunch of really cheap pumpkins, but the deer seem to eat them later.  I'll bust one out tomorrow and report if I see any eating it. I've saved a crapload of apples in an old fridge for late rifle. Some might last into late archery ML.

I am going to recommend anyone that comes out to bring a can or two of the apple scent bombs, don't know how they could resist that.

I throw our pumpkins out in the field every year and nothing touches them. There's 20+ head of elk out there more often then not.  Apples work better in my experience.

I don't think my pumpkins got touched this year, oddly.

From now until September they will be all over my salt and mineral mix.  At least on the Eastside.  I've had zero luck with salt on the Westside.

We have deer and elk running around, I've put out alfalfa in a few different places under my cameras.  I've never had deer or elk eat any alfalfa!!!  strangest thing man!

Man they hammer mine. Cubes for elk and compressed bails for deer.
