5 PTS FOR ELK, ANY IDEAS?
« on: March 11, 2009, 08:27:45 PM »
ive got five points for elk for the first time and was going to put in for big bull somewhere for East Side.  Ive always put in for cow, as ive always drawn with 1 or 2 pts, and heck they eat just as well, but i think this year id like to try the taste of some antlers.  Any ideas where to put in..... thanks!!! :dunno:

anywhere because with 5 points you probably wont be at the top of points for the draws but youve got a shot, yakima units are gonna be your best bet but youre probably still 3-4 years out on a big bull tag if youre a rifle hunter

Did ya shoot one?

I would say rimrock is your best bet by the way. Tough unit to hunt though. :twocents:

Well I have been applying fot the Toutle and Margaret for twelve years and no dice(archery). Your guess is as good as mine. I figure I am in so far now that I might as well hold out for Nooksack or nothing. If I don't draw then I can always kill a bull in my back yard. :chuckle:

You have 12 points.  We should put in as partners this year.   :chuckle:  JK.  But seriously I'd think about putting in for the Colockum.  I would happily guide you in there.  I always see some serious pigs in there.  Sure there is poaching and some the Yakamas go in there but, if you go off the beaten path where I go you will see some truly magnificent animals.   :twocents:

I wouldn't waste my points on rimrock.  That unit has been a real bummer the last few years.  Used to be good.  There are some nice bulls still running that unit, but not like they were 5 years ago or more.  You will earn it if you draw that tag.

If you only want to rifle hunt then 5 points isn't going to get you much.  But, if you're open to archery or muzzle-loader seasons then there is a ton of great hunts you've got a chance at with 5 or 6 points.  My recomendation is Peaches Ridge, Archery. Good luck!

You might as well be hunting the wet side rimrock is just as thick and It depends on the weather there if there is no snow there is no elk! simple as that it's a gamble

GP can be good, can be tough too.  Depends on the year and the weather.  With the later dates it is more favorable for the hunters, probably why tag numbers got dropped this year in the units.

Mostly unroaded... well, the Bumping GMU part of it anyway. The Nile from what I know you'll likely have pleny of company. In my opinion it's a good hunt to draw if you have horses.
