Moving to Montana

Well everyone, I got a job in Montana and will be moving there in a month. I will be working for the USFS and will be outside 8 days at a time collecting data on streams in the back country. I am very excited for this opportunity but am unfamiliar with the area, regulations, and the state in general. Any advice in terms of hunting, fishing, or just Montana living in general would be  great. I don't know many people from the area (I'll be in St Regis), so if you want to go fishing or hiking and you're from the area, let me know. Also, is there a forum like this but for Montana? I haven't been able to find one.

Congrats on the job. A few protips:

Leave your WA plates on your Subaru Forrester for as long as possible.  Might even want to slap a few "Hillary" bumper stickers on for effect , they color coordinate with WA plates well.

Make sure you ask everyone you meet if they'll take you to the "River runs through it" steams to fish.  They'll be much more accommodating if you are wearing your waders and Orvis vest at the time and have a wicker creel vidible in the back of your Subaru.

Also be sure to go to the very first city council meeting you can to introduce yourself.  Explain that you're a WA transplant, and that you look forward to quickly becoming involved to "make some needed changes around here."

Congrats on the job !!! You will like the area I have some friends that live in St Regis. You wont be able to hunt the first yr, it takes longer to become a residence. I dont think anyhow. I might me wrong it sure wouldnt be the first time.

Sweet!  I spent many years in NW MT.  Lots to do there.  You're only a few hours away from Glacier Park and "The Bob".  Great fishing to be had in the Clarkfork, Kootenai, and Flathead Rivers not to mention the numerous lakes if you have a boat.  Hunting can be great for elk, MD, and WT's if you can get em before the wolves do  .  Backcountry hikes/trails abound in NW MT with some killer high lakes to fish.  Talk about some nice weekend excursions awaiting you and your family!

Be sure to emphasis that you are a "progressive" Democrat and Hillary wasn't your first choice as she isn't "left" enough.

Congrats on the job.  That is a sweet gig.   Beautiful country up there, and plenty of elk opportunities.   Not far from the Bob Marshall, which is still on my bucket list for a backcountry hunt some year.   Enjoy.   I have friends that live over by Flathead lake to the northeast of you, and they love it there.

We hunt right out of saint regis. It is a really cool area, good deer hunting, some elk around, great fishing and not too far of a drive to missoula. Congrats on the move

Don't forget to visit Quinn's Hot Springs. Just a short drive north of St Regis. My brother lives in Wallace, ID and when we visit sometimes we drive over the pass just to visit the hot springs.  If you are into biking, they have also turned the old railroad grade into a bike path. I haven't done that yet, but I think you start at the ski resort at the top of the pass and it's an all downhill ride into Montana.  And just east of St Regis, I think in Superior, is a neat old book shop.

Best dentist is up in Plains.  Dr. Andrew and Elizabeth Ordelheide.  Invest in a brush guard for your rig because you will probably hit something if you ever drive at night.

Your a lucky man I lived in Dillon MT for two years. I can say without a doubt that I miss it once a week and that was 18 years ago.

Its past Missoula, but stop and check out Ekstroms Stage Station in Clinton, MT. Right off Rock Creek Road, awesome awesome awesome breakfast. I haven't had anything else there... I tried that place a year ago and I still dream about the breakfast there. I'm going back in a month

Invest in a bow if you don't already have one. Mostly public land is high and bow season is the best way to get after game on public land.
