Special permit dumb question
« on: May 15, 2018, 01:18:01 PM »
I couldn't find it in the regs, and the search of the topic on this site pulled up so many results it's a lot to wade through.  So I thought I'd put out this rather dumb question for a guy who's never drawn a special permit before (other than second deer), so not sure how it works.

If I draw the special permit for antlerless deer this year (which I have more points than the "average" listed, so who knows maybe this is my year), does the state send me another transport tag for the antlerless permit or do I have to go to the store and exchange my current transport tag (buck) for the special antlerless permit transport tag?

I ask this as I'm curious if by drawing the special anterless permit if I get to keep the existing transport tag for buck as well, and can shoot either antlerless or buck (as it's the same season dates for this particular unit).   Or have to pick which transport tag before the hunt.   As I know I'm limited to only one deer.

You will get the permit in the mail, and you carry it and your regular tag during your hunt.

Your tag will be good for either an antlered or antlerless in your permit area, and your tag is good outside the permit area for whatever is open in those areas.

Good luck!!

 :yeah:

As stated just make sure to have the post card that specifies the permit on your person with your regular tag

As stated. Your general season tag will be good for either a doe or legal buck. If you were to draw the antlerless tag. You don’t get a special tag for the antlerless just a post card in the mail that you have to carry while on your hunt.

Thanks for the replies folks.   Appreciate it.   Especially the comments about the postcard, and keeping that with me.   Would suck to accidentally discard it not realize it was the actual permit.

The only time you’d get another tag is if it was for a second deer, other wise it is as above. Carry both transport tag and letter authorizing the atlerless harvest.
My interpretation of the rules are open to interpretation.

The transport tag you have is for a deer, not just a buck. While using your deer tag you have to follow the rules for the GMU where you hunt. You can put your transport tag on a doe during an open general season if the GMU you hunt allows it.
As said above, you'll get a special permit in the mail if drawn, and your transport tag can then be used within the rules of your permit.

Another dumb question here: Why would you want a tag for an antlerless if you already have a tag for deer that you could use in a GMU that allows harvest of a buck? or "Any deer"?

Because not many units are open for "any deer." Could be specific to where the OP wants to hunt also.

Transport tags are never gender specific. Permits may be and most seasons are.

Thanks for the replies folks.   Yes, should not have used the words "buck tag" to describe the transport tag.

Two of the units I prefer to hunt deer offer antlerless tags as a special permit.

What happens if you draw a elk cow and bull tag? I know you don't get both hunts, but do you get your points back if you opt out?

You have one transport tag and may kill one elk. If you have multiple permits you can hunt them all. You lose points in all categories that you draw.

One thing so many people are confused about- we don't draw tags, we draw permits.

No.

You can hunt both permit seasons if you chose though, but can only take one animal.

One thing to keep in mind is the timing of each permit season.

So, if the bull permit hunt is before the antlerless, can hunt it and hold out for a good bull. And then, if you don't connect, you have the antlerless permit for back-up insurance as it were to put some meat in the freezer.
