Tarp?
« on: April 09, 2018, 07:50:17 PM »
Thinking of adding a tarp to my pack.  I have a great tent with vestibules but looking to add a tarp for more options.  I have saw them from $5-$300 range.  Any advice would be great, thanks.

I bought a 9 ft by 10 ft Sil nylon tarp from Jonathan s. It weighs ounces, and fit inside a small flat rate box. I stretched it out, and he has d loops and Guy points in all the right spots, it will make a great super lightweight shelter, and extra storage space for bigger camps. Send him a PM, see what he thinks.

I made one for far less than I have seen them for sale new.  You can buy the material, sew and edge and put whatever loops on it you want.  With the extra material, you can make stuff sacks or whatever else you want.

another vote for the SO DST.  I use it as my primary shelter for weekend bivy trips.  Serves double duty in my day pack as an emergency shelter or a mid-day glassing shack to keep sun or rain at bay.

Jimmytarps makes a great 10x10 that’s is super small packed and weighs nothing. I think the one I got is called “the Skyline” or something like that. Super good guy to work with. I think his contact info is on Facebook only as far as I remember. I added a few xtra guyout points for just a few xtra bucks.. anyways, I’m super happy with it and have used it to sleep under and also make a nice shady spot on a few sunny days.

9x10 or 10x10 is the ideal size in my opinion.

Tried making a 6x9 but it was too small for anything but emergency.  Turned it into a pack cover  :chuckle:
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Bearpaw Wilderness has new tarps in their close out/discounted section. 10x10 for $95 I think. 9x9 for a little cheaper.

I have two of these and they work great.  From emergency bivy to shade for the meat pole to extra rain protection in Camp... so many uses.

Thanks for all the advice.  I am thinking about $100 price range. How much do these tarps weigh?

Goat range on Amazon for $35. 11ft hex tarp with guy lines and stakes. I swapped for DAC stakes and the whole thing is 17ounces.

This is what Il'L be packing this weekend. I plan on using it for a sun shade, but it'll also double as a rain shelter. I got sunburnt last year during spring bear.

Another shout out to JonathanS.   I've got a tarp, badger hole, and two different sized tipi's from him.  Top notch design and stitching and a super duper guy to boot.  Buy local and support our community I say!
