Free range Texas Aoudad
« on: April 13, 2018, 07:48:24 AM »
Well I will try to make this short and sweet. Last winter a buddy asked if my father and I would like to go to Texas on free range non guided audad hunt out of marathon Texas the price was right so we said sure😜. We decided that we should be pretty close to being calved out by the first of April so we set a launch date of April 2nd. So with the trailer loaded with he Can Am and all the hunting gear we set out for the 1850 mile trip the goal was Moab the first night. Well dummy me I forgot it was Jeep safari week no hotels 😞 so a extra hour down the road to Monticello.

Day two start out early and we made great time driving thru south west corner of Colorado and right down the center of New Mexico and then thru El Paso  and finally Marathon Texas. The ranch was about 30 miles south tell we hit the main ranch entrance which was another 25 miles in on a private road. So after rattling down this gravel driveway for a hour when finally reach the bunk house hunting cabin ..

Oh no plat.😜I’m getting the boiling pot going to get heads boiled.
The ranch is a operational cattle ranch of 145,000 acres in which it takes 150 acres to run a cow calve pair. They lease the ranch to a hunting group for deer which they usually harvest 15-20 buck a year of it. So let’s step into the cabin.

Day 1 of hunting and ranch rules kill every that moves except deer, desert big horn and cattle. The jack rabbits, javelina and all other predators fair game. The claim for every 10 jack rabbits you can feed one cow. Learning the lay of the ranch and the basic habitat and liking of the aoudad was a learning curve high Mesa, bluffs and caves.

Day 2 Friday a couple dozen dead jack rabbit and not a aoudad to be found 😢. We did happen to glass this big boy up . So that evening back at the cabin I cooked up some steak on a open mesquite grill.. Saturday new day👍found more aoudad and was able to take another . That evening another great meal of pork chop over open grill . Two rams down and two day left to hunt feeling good.

Sounds like a great time. Congrats and thanks for sharing the story and pics.
How many rabbits did you take out? Any other animals?
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Lost count around 75-80 rabbits had to borrow ammo from owner he had a pallet yes I said pallet of 223 ammo. I tried to talk him into taking up in helicopter to shoot coyotes but couldn’t get it done . I took a little grey fox one evening and my dad was able to connect of a stink pig .
