Delorme Inreach

Can anyone tell me the differences between the SE(yellow) and explorer(orange)? Also, will they take batteries or only run on the internal one? Thanks

The yellow is primarily for txting.  The orange adds navigation - gps but its really cumbersome - use your phone or a garmin instead.

I picked up the orange and need to get it setup and play with it a bit. My understanding is MW is right

Batteries our internal.. so you’d have to get something like a portable charger if your concerned about battery life. I have the yellow one. An if your just using it to text a few times a day am keeping it shut off most the time the battery should last you a week easy.

I have the original yellow model and love it! honestly I really don't see a need for the orange (GPS) model as the yellow model can link with your phone via blue tooth and connects all of the GPS info to your phone, just remember to turn Bluetooth off when your not texting or checking GPS as it will eat the batteries in both your phone and the unit. As far as battery life I have kept my unit on while hiking and transmitting my location every 30 mins. to my buddies and I still got 4 days of battery life with that type of usage. I also carry and Anker charger for my phone and DeLorme.

Its honestly the most important piece of equipment in my pack as I primarily hunt backcountry alone. Its major piece of mind for my wife and family.

If you can pick up any of the units for $250 your in good shape! I purchased the older DeLorme SE (Yellow Model) 6 moths ago for $250 so if you can get the Garmin version for $250 buy it!

This was the Delorme Inreach, orange version.  I don't think you can get the Garmin version for anything close to $250.  :)

I have the yellow old one pre Garmin and it works amazingly well.  I agree, the best combo is On X on your phone, Inreach for texting and a spare battery bank, but you will likely only use it for your phone unless you are in longer than 3 days.

If you watch for coupon codes, you can get the Garmin SE for under $300. I will be buying one before this upcoming season, just waiting til I can score one for that price again.

My only concern with the battery is a few years down the road when or if it starts to weaken. Still seams like the best option though.

I have an older yellow one also. Use as others paired with my phone as a GPS. I have a couple of free downloaded map apps that are fantastic

.  You really need to use phone with inreach for best experience  so if you have phone anyway you may as well use that for Onx.
