Winchester 101
« on: August 09, 2018, 11:40:53 AM »
Any Winchester 101 experts out there. I am in the market for an O/U 12ga and have been considering one of these. I know some of the older ones were made in Japan and the new ones are made by FN in Belgium. What should I know about new vs old? Should I be looking for a new one or an old one?  How do they fit?

Old ones made in Japan are good guns, in the trap world they have a reputation for recoil...but in context that is 300 a day.  I have not handled a new FN made one but I don't think you will go wrong with either.

Thanks for the reply. How would they compare with a Japan made Browning?

Another question is, anyone in the Spokane area with a 101 that they would let me shoot?

Japanese Browning are made by Miroku, I own 7 different Browning Miroku's and have zero complaints on 6 of them.  My kid shoots a Browning XT, and it does not like about 1 out of 50 of my reloads, but they work in any other gun.  No idea why.

The Winchesters where made by Olin Kodensha (I am sure I am misspelling that)  Nothing wrong with them at all.  I saw a single barrel Trap 101 at NW Pawn yesterday as a matter of fact.  I shoot a lot of trap and always check the used racks.

Call Double Eagle in Deer Park, they have everything.

In the same price range new in the box Browning CX (shots 60/40) is a great gun for the money.  The CXT (trap) shoots 70/30 and the CXS (skeet) 50/50

Hell Double Eagle might still have the CX I traded them for the #()$(+%+# XT that does not like reloads.

You are on the right path for an affordable O/U with the 101.  That is 100 times the gun than any of the Turkish crap.  People will pop on here and say they are great....they are not if you plan on shooting more than a box a year and you will never get your money out of them

No idea who this guy is.  No photos of the lever.  If it is right of center that is a good buy

Thanks! I agree with you on the Turkish guns. I would really like to find a good deal on a browning but that is harder than it looks so I have been exploring other options. The 101 seems to be a nice gun. I found a few at NW pawn but one was beat to hell, one had a loose rib, and the other was the trap gun you are talking about. That is a nice gun but I am looking for a field gun. I will check out the add you posted.

I recently got one of the new FN made 101's, its the ultimate field from bass pro. They are $999 again starting the 10th. Mine is a solid shooting and feeling gun and it doesnt seem to push back as hard as the older ones.
Practical accuracy and a packable rifle.
Blued steel and walnut is always better.
