Youth Hunt Advice
« on: April 22, 2018, 01:43:19 PM »
Hey guys and gals! Hope everyone got drawn for multi deer and Elk!
Straight to the point here!
First and last year my daughter can and will be able to apply for youth hunts.
Deer is modern but drew multi deer. No bow but muzzy and rifle.
Elk normal rifle tag westside.
Any ones that are worth applying for over others? I am not to familiar with these youth draws since this is the first time we get to deal with them.
She has killed her white tail buck last season. So we are open to some good mule deer and black tail hunts for the kids.
Elk draws we ain't picky just which is would be better over others. Any tips and advice are welcome! We do love east side hunting btw and we live in yelm! Good luck to all tius year!

My kids graduated a couple years ago, but I still pay attention to the youth hunts a bit.

Deer- I'd say it really boils down to where you want to hunt. Access or familiarity would be my primary factors. Lot's of options; there's deer in all of 'em. That said, I doubt I would apply in a far off unit I know little or nothing about. The WDFW does a good job at providing youth options for deer that are well spread out so folks can hunt closer to home or in GMUs they are likely familiar with.

All of the deer hunts are antlerless/any deer/any buck, which give the option of a doe or smaller buck than general seasons in those units allow. Most run at the same time as general season. Basically they're designed so a kid has an easier time finding a shootable animal in an area the family would likely be hunting anyway. Some on the westside at least open a week early. Weyco does allow Skookumchuck  youth hunters in without a permit last I checked.

Elk- Most of the westside elk are the same deal. What area do you want to hunt or are already familiar with? A lot would depend on timber company access, most of which will be sold out before you would know if she drew a permit. Toutle has plenty of state land. The only bull hunt is Mudflow which is on public ground, but steep odds of drawing. Some like North Bend and Skagit are easier to draw, but are completely on private. On the plus side you'd have a lot of time to try and secure access.

I wish your daughter good luck with the draw and hunt!

Nothing wrong with your choices but I'd consider changing the order. Why have the 1 in 15 odds permit first, followed by a permit with 1 in 40 odds. I'd have them in the same order as their hunt numbers: 2427, 2428, 2429, 2430.

Dream yeah the region hunts I am still contemplating on since it's only if they call you. I might throw one in there I am not sure. How often to they actually call on hunters do you know?
