Poll

This is a followup to this thread https://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,226917.0.html.  What are your thoughts on brushing your rifle bore?

No way - patches only no matter what.
ONLY use brushes for barrel break-in.  Patches only after that.
Nylon brushes only.
Bronze brushes are fine.
Any brush is good - doesn't matter.

Do you brush your rifle bore? POLL

I'm debating going back to patches only after doing a little more research on this.  There are so many opinions out there on this subject.   Would like to know what others here think.

Nylon or brass brushes work fine.  Never had a problem using them.

I don’t use a brush very often but I try to use nylon when I do. Sometimes the only way to remove a carbon ring is a long soak with Kroil and a brush.

I recently spent some time researching this because a new Hell's Canyon was copper fouling, badly. Short of trying a long extended soak, which I didn't want to do, using a bronze brush w/ Kroil / JB was the only way to get it all removed. My groups tightened up immediately. I don't know, this one shoots far tighter when truly clean. With all the rifles I've recently tested, it's very rarely truly clean until you use a brush. Some will shoot as good or better if dirty, so I wouldn't use a brush there. In most cases, everything I've read (as credible sources as possible) suggest brushing your bore will not harm "the average" rifle and we are all just being overly cautious. Good posts N7XW.

I ran a nylon brush for breakin. Patches for now until it opens up a bit then I will run a brush again.

It is a choice, do you use a brush and cleaner or chemicals? I think you  could run a brush for the rest of your life and not wear the bore at all. I know nothing about chemical wear.

10 strokes with a nylon brush every 40 rounds.   What % are those strokes wearing out the barrel compared to the 40 rounds ?  Depends on bullet on powder used.  Some need it some not as much.  Dirty powder like retumbo and barnes copper bullet I would be brushing for sure.

Retumbo is definitely a dirty powder to shoot and I’m far from an expert with it but the fouling doesn’t appear to hurt anything in my rig. End of a 50 round day was still banging at 720 and 1000

Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

My competition gun I ran a brush down it after the close of every match.  Then ran patches down it to clean.  I use the sight in period for fouling shots and make sure my mark is on.  Usually up to 5 shots.  Never had any issues.  I shoot like this until I start loosing my tight group.  At that point I would replace the barrel.

I run the bore snake with some gun oil in my guns, but I should clean them more, one of my faults.

I'll add that even though I don't clean the bore often I do clean the chamber.  Clean behind the lug recess and the throat area.  Clean the bolt good and grease.  Sinclair sells a very handy chamber cleaning kit.
