I love my 3.5. Had it just over a year and have 23k miles on it.
It impressed @coachcw going to Colorado and back. Loaded completely full. Set the cruise and just went at 87-90 mph.
Haven’t towed a bunch but I don’t normally tow a lot.

Not to Jack this thread but Jackelopes post showing the Horse power etc. on these motor made me look at some other companies and the ratings they publish.  I do not believe any of them, I think the HP ratings are pumped up by every one of them.

All my friends who had the "eco-boost" after towing for a little bit, got rid of them and went with the Dodge Hemi model.

Just like chain saws,  smaller required more RPM's which in the long run wore out faster.  Larger saws with low end torque lasted longer and got more done!

If you just have to have a Ford,  the 5L is the only choice you've offered on list.

That thinking is 30 years out of date.

Engine choice will obviously depend on individual needs. For me, and I suspect the majority that use a light truck for occasional towing of a fishing boat or other fairly light trailer (and don't need a V8 to prove their manhood) the standard V6 has worked great. Mine is a 2017 with 12k miles.

2014 5.0 supercrew 4x4. Daily driver getting 18+ mpg commuting, better on open road. Tow a 4600lb. dry weight 2017 trailer. Absolutely couldn't be happier with this truck. I'd buy another 5.0 in a heart beat and would have to be really talked into buying the Eco boost. Sorry.

For those who do opt for the V6, that must be one heck of a motor. Everyone knows what they like.

I think that any of these engines would suit my needs.

A guy I know at work just bought a 3.5L in a Lariat with the tow package, little knob to help backup your trailer, all the bells and whistles.  He doesn’t own a trailer, doesn’t hunt or fish or off road.  Drives it to work every day and somehow finds a parking spot that it fits in.  Why?  :dunno: I guess he likes big trucks.  He’s happy.

I added the 3.0 Diesel to the poll, just in case someone actually finds one.

Probably because all of that stuff was on the truck sitting on the lot. Pretty standard stuff on a Lariat.

(edited to clarify that stuff is not standard equipment, but that's how dealers order those trucks a lot of the time)

When I was selling Fords, I can't remember a 4x4 F150 that we didn't order with a tow package.

I,ve got a 2016 with the 2.7L eco, I love it, I,ve pulled our 5500lb trailer all over the west with it,(have also pulled others up to 7000lb) hardly know its back there. No issues, gets around 20-23 mpg on the hwy, around 17-20 in town and pulling the 5500LB trailer to Yellowstone, all through Wyoming, Utah, Idaho and Washington we averaged right around 13mpg.

If you ask me, the 2.7 Ecoboost is almost pound for pound more impressive than the 3.5.

I'm fairly convinced that most of the guys down talking the 3.5 in this thread are only doing so because it's a V6 and it doesn't make the cool V8 noise.

I just makes good sense. Even if you don't need the tow package. The guy you sell it to in 10 years will probably want it.

Also, Ford really streamlined the ordering options a while back. When I first started (2005), you could order just about any option a la carte. Sunroof with cloth, 4x2 with offroad package, all kinds of odd configurations. Now there are only usually only 2, maybe 3 package options per trim level.

On the ford forums seems a lot of guys having issues with the turbo bearings after 60 to 70 k. Both my neighbors F 150 with the eco boost had major issues only after a few years. Most vehicles run fine the first few years but the real test is after 70 k or so of use and towing. If I'm spending over 40 k for a basic truck I want it to last a long time.

I would  go with V 8 if towing a lot. I looked at the eco boost recently  and after research decided to buy a Tundra with the tow package. Gas mileage isn't as good as eco boost but they have great record as far as dependability goes.

I just had to buy a new truck because my old pickup finally crapped out.  It was irritating that damn near every newer (new or used) truck had the short box.  If you want the standard 6.5 foot box, which I did, it really narrows your options.  It's almost like truck owners don't actually use the truck as truck.
