Interesting names show up Wolfbait.

Ben Maletzke was at one time working with WSU as the large carnivore research Bio. in around 2010. Now he's a specialist for the WDFW.

I think it was in 2011 that WSU, CNW and WDFW were doing a study as to the impact of wolves on the mule deer in the Methow, they were walking through wolf killed deer to net and collar deer.  A friend and I talk to them, they said there was only two or three wolves in the lookout pack, and we showed them pictures of eight different wolves we had seen in the last two weeks. That was the same time that CNW said that fitkin knew of the other wolf pack up in Bridge Cr, but that it was to expensive to confirm.

I don't think we ever heard what the study said, but that winter the wolves were slaughtering the hell out of deer form Mazama to Black Canyon, we know as we hike into many kills, along with some cougar kills that wolves drove the cougars off of.

Now here we are seven years later, in the same spot with WDFW etc. continuing to lie to the people of WA.
Interesting, in nearly a decade on here you have never posted a picture of a wolf...one coyote, but never a wolf.  I would have guessed that you would share your wolf pics with this group, if you had any...

Really? Well I guess I should probably change that, might take me a few days to go through some external hard drives, but I will make sure I post a few for you WAcoyote.

This picture was taken a few days before we talk to CNW, WSU as they were doing their "wolf impact" study.

It's a little hard to see, unless you really zoom it up, we spotted this big wolf laying on a ridge above wolf kills South of Twisp.

As Fitkin would say "That sure is a big coyote"

Same time frame as the pic above, wolves were howling it up, killed a deer about half mile outside of Twisp in lower Alder Cr., we hiked in and saw these two.

We showed this photo to several people who know wolves, they thought wolf hybrid, maybe coyote/wolf, at any rate it wasn't afraid of us and stood off about fifty yards. This was taken just below the first photo of the big wolf.

My dad and I and a partner ran into something like this back in the 90,s up Boulder creek(Methow) one winter. The yote/wolf/ whatever paralleled us down a road in the middle of winter while we were doing some scouting, it was up the embankment from us and would stop when we stopped. A fella that was with us said "that a huge coyote!", my dad who had seen LOTS of wolves during the time he spent in Alaska working in my Great grandparents canaries and working on the pipeline said "that is not a coyote!!" we pulled out the video camera and filmed it for about 10 minutes. It dropped down the embankment onto the road in front of us and stared us down for at least 30-40 seconds, it was maybe 20 or so yards away. We whistled, yelled and even threw snowballs at it, it slowly walked over to the other side of the road and dropped over the side into a jack pine jungle.  We showed the video to a game fella we knew and he kind of scratched his head, paused and said "It must be a huge coyote", well, that coyote acted, looked like and in no way resembled any yote I have ever seen and it was twice the size of my 90lb lab.

In 92 or so we were cruising a timber sale up the Eight mile, and found a wolf den, saw one big wolf and tracks of others, we told the USFS, they said to keep it hushed as they were planted wolves.

One time in the 70's a friend and I had hiked in to South lake up the Twisp river, we got to talking to a FS ranger and my friend ask him about wolves people had seen, the ranger said it was suppose to be all on the hush hush, because they were planted. I had never seen any wolves but the guy I was with had.

Another time we were up in a long drainage, and at lunch time we were rolling rocks, getting close to the end of the sale, the USFS "biologist" were going through the sale making sure there weren't any "endangered" critters. They came across the area where we had rolled the rocks, and said they were 99.9% sure of a grizzly bear sighting, they said the grizzly bears were digging for glacier lilies. They fairly glowed with excitement, pictures were taken, other biologists were called in etc..

Mean while our crew debated on whether to fess up or go along and see where it went. Pretty soon in came the big wigs from Portland, they were going to throw the whole sale out, they had no bear scat, no tracks, no hair, no bear anything, just a bit of tore up ground. End of the story we fessed up, and they threw out around 200 acres just to save face.

We never got in any trouble for rock rolling, but after a while we did get told not to ask if they were 99.9% sure of anything, over the big radio. :chuckle:

Same area, late in the fall we saw a Dall Sheep and a big 4x4 mule buck hanging together, I had never seen a Dall Sheep in the wild before, it was one of those times we wished we had a camera.

After the grizzly bear farce we kept what we saw to our selves.

Fitkin and Crew believe the Methow deer herd is in tip top shape too!!   I was told that the reason we didn't see as many deer last winter was because it was so nice up high they didn't migrate down! :o :o :o

Wow what an ass.

In 2015 I saw 3 wolves on top of a ridge by elbow coulee about 1000 yards off for a grand total of 2-3 minutes. And two days earlier on Thompson ridge myself and a hunting partner saw a single wolf chasing a buck on a full sprint down a ridge. The buck did a face plant and was up in a split second to full speed running for its life as a wolf silently glided, angling towards it. It was so loud when we first heard the deer I thought an elk was across the draw. This encounter lasted a total of 15 seconds before they were out of sight. I don’t carry a camera so I don’t have any photos. So apparently this never happened. Just like trees don’t make a sound if nobody is around.  :o
