I bought a little .243 for my wife. It shoots really well but the action was a little stiff. I buffed it out a bit where it seemed to be sticking with a dremel (buffing pad) and it's a lot smoother now. It's not a Sako but it good for the price.

I'd look for something else. Lots of great options out there for about the same price. Weatherby Vanguard's are a really good rifle. Or get a Savage Axis. Its not my favorite but I'd take one any day over a Remington 783. My daughter's Axis in 7/08 shoots nice tight groups and I got it on sale for $199. Or get a used rifle. Great bargains in the classifieds here on this forum all the time.

I guess ruger American ,savage axis, compass, rem 783,are budget rifles , with all other things aside ,in looking for most accurate of the four ,price, wight, everything else does not matter to me except accuracy.and I all ready have a savage axis. :chuckle:

I'd take a Ruger American too, over the 783. Lots of good reviews. The Remington at a minimum will at least need a new trigger.

Or how about this Howa for $400:

I promise it's a much better rifle than the Remington 783. Only about $70 more.

Yes they do, now I'm having to talk myself out of buying one for myself!   :chuckle:

Looks like it's either 243 Win. or 7mm-08 if you want a legal big game caliber.

I like the Ruger American I got one in 243 and its a really nice shooting gun and has a clip otherwise I’d recommend the Vanguard if your budget conscious

A friend of mine bought a 783 last year and I helped him work up loads for it.  The trigger feels good and we both shot 1" groups with it, so I'd say it is worth the money.

I am really happy with my Ruger American predator in 308.Those Howa rifles are really nice also i had a Ranchland compact in 308 with the Hogue stock and it was a great rifle. My good buddy has a Remington 783 in 270 it's ok not a rifle i would purchase it's not a bad rifle the accuracy is decent. One issue is the recoil pad is disintegrating.

I'd take a good look at the TC Venture or Compass.  1 moa guarantee and from what I've researched, not a BS claim.  I picked up a 270 for $150 after rebate.  Have yet to shoot it but seems like a solid rifle.  Fit and finish is a little better than the Axis in my opinion.  My only beef with it is the stock forend is a little skinny.  Other than that, it's a really nice rifle.  Bolt has 3 locking lugs and is 0.783" dia. if I remember correctly.  You can find the Venture or Compass for around $275-300 if you shop around.  I use this website to search deals:

Good luck.
