That sucks.  I fish both areas a lot and dont see that many people crabbing.  A few pots hear and there, but nothing like carpet bombing an area.

In area 13 last year it was terrible for Dungeness.  However, I wish they could allow for red rock crabbing.  The kids still have fun doing that and although not as meaty there are plenty of them to catch and they taste good.  Why can't they create a regulation that allows for crabbing but you must release all  Dungeness crabs??????

Love that the graph of harvest shows the blue lines always just a little above recreational.  Pretty easy to "report" numbers when you get the other teams harvest.  Yes I imply they cook the books.  Sort of like the salmon harvest through the damn locks.

One thing is for certain, if there is a resource, man will pillage it.  Pretty sad.

I asked a bio about this a few months back. He agreed there were more than enough red rock crabs but wasn’t sure the tribe(s) would agree.  I guess we have our answer.

That's the problem with this state, we give the tribes too much say, who gives a rats butt what they think about us having a red rock crab season. wdfw and the state gov have NO balls when it comes to the tribes.

I was advocating for a red rock only season because my kids don't care at all which kind they catch.  They have a blast either way.  My son actually cried a little bit this morning when I told him no crabbing season this year here in 13.

Guess we'll be crabbing elsewhere and less often (and maybe without a PS endorsement).

That sucks. My 5yo grandson is going to really miss the day trips out for crab.
I'll have to make a trip or two over to hood canal.

I see a lot of references to the tribes and red rock crab.  I am unaware of a commercial red rock season by state or tribal fishermen.  I am not sure why a state biologist would say that the tribes would not go for it?  That makes no sense.  What makes sense to me is that there might be some folks too lazy to go through the effort of writing up new regulations for the two closed marine areas.

Ya this sucks for the our kids! When I found out about this last night I told my wife it’s going to be sad that our kids (5 and 2) might not remember what it was like to salmon fish and crab in the Puget Sound!! Hopefully things rebound for our kids!

They try to agree on a season (I know that's been pretty unsuccessful down here in 13) with the tribes.  I suspect the tribes didn't want to parse out the impact that a rec season on red rocks would have on dungies, especially if they tribes weren't fishing.

It could also be that enforcement didn't want to screw with policing a red rock fishery when dungies would undoubtedly be retained, released, etc.

I understand the seasonal negotiations, maybe I am naive, but I can't see the tribes or state getting wrapped up in recreational harvest of red rock crab assuming that there would be a significant enough impact by poachers keeping Dungeness crab instead of releasing them.  I understand there is a cost associated with policing, but that is already factored into the annual budget.  If they want to reduce the amount of policing, have it during popular salmon seasons when patrols should already be out on the water.
