Suspect Bear Weight
« on: May 24, 2018, 04:24:12 PM »
Tyler Freel posted this today.  He’s killed a LOT of critters. (11 fall sheep).  Besides the fact that he killed it with a stone arrow head and stick bow.

Final score was 7’ squared bear, 19 1/4” skull, and live weighed at....248 lbs.

Please subtract at least 100 lbs from all your guesstimates.

I know you’re brothers friend said it was 300+.  It wasn’t.

Preach Tyler.

Is this a spring bear? If so that weight will change dramatically by fall

Skull measurements are the only numbers that count. Not sure why weight is always brought up.

If some guy came on here claiming his buck was 195” when it was clearly 130-40” you wouldn’t expect him to get grief? There’s multiple bears right now posted in the bear forum that are insanely off.

If you didn’t weigh him on a scale, don’t post the weight is all I’m saying.

Why don’t we ever get guys to show skull measurements? It literally takes 5 min and 2 2x4s.

You forgot to add 8 lbs or so for estimated blood loss

If your so worried about it call them out individually. Instead you start a thread and make a comment that will be read by some people who have probably forgotten about more bears than you’ve seen.

This seems like a better spot to have a discussion than on someone’s thread. I take this as an informational post.

Most bears are severely over estimated when it comes to weight and overall size in general.

Everyone I know has seen a 300# bear, the truth is they are probably 150# bears.

Yep, skull is really the only benchmark that can be reliably measured on most bears. I have “heard” of plenty of 500+ lb. bears, but weight is pretty subjective on all but a few bears I have ever been in on. I have been in on a few fall hunts over the last few years with skull measurements ranging from ~17 12/16” - 19 7/16” and not one weighed over 300 lbs.  I harvested a huge fall sow that had over 80 lbs of boned meat in the quarters and back straps, probably 250-300 live weight, skull only went a little over 17” though.

Didn’t have a scale but the four of us that it took to carry him up the hill all agreed he was at least 300 lbs.  maybe he was only 250 but the thing was damn heavy.
