Vacuum Sealers

Ok, our Cabelas vac sealer is dying a slow death. Getting time for a upgrade, I found that replacement parts for the one we have are no longer available, in the future that will be a consideration. Whats everyone's though. Go cheap and replace more often, or spend the money?

I think I paid about 70 bucks for a 1,000 4 mil 8X12 bags.  I purchased the Vacmaster VP215 for about 750ish.

I agree with the above statements. I loved my old vacuum packer. I actually bought one of the first ones back when it was an as seen on tv only buy. A couple years ago I bought a 215 and have not looked back. It will do circles around non chamber types. The added bonus is that it can do damn near any plastic bag; old vaccu bags, ziplock bags, non mylar bags. These things are super adjustable.

I've got a foodsaver 11" and used it to package my elk this past year for freezing.  It's nice.  I like being able to pull meat from the freezer and throw it in water to thaw. 

But honestly, I could live without it.  I haven't found it to be substantially better than saran wrap and freezer paper for meat, and freezer ziplocks for anything else. 

There's my 2¢ anyway.

I've been using a Foodsaver for years.  From vacuum packing fish and game to DIY backpacking meals it is arguably the best piece of gear I have.

I've had a 215 now for 5+ years.  The bag savings have easily paid for it by now.  But I vacuum seal everything.  I also buy the bags in lots of 1000.  They are a small fraction of the price of pleated bags for non-chamber sealers.  Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.  Another huge cost savings is in bulk spices.  I seal them in small quantities, just enough to use over a couple months or so.
