22-250 scope

Looking for input and opinions on what scope to put on a 22-250. I want to be able to shoot that 500 yard coyote every time. This gun is a shooter and I want to match it with a great scope.

i know the older i get the more those fine wire crosshair scopes aren't doing me any favors...keep that in mind especially when you are shooting at 500 yards.  good luck and good shooting...sux to get old

That's a great point! I had a Weaver T-36 on one of my BR rifles for a while and that fine crosshair was only good on a bright white background. Sometimes an illuminated reticle helps when you want to have a fine crosshair but still be able to see it on a dark target.

I had a Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 with a standard duplex on my 22-250 and it worked great for me. I even used it in some informal BR matches in the off season and it did a great job as both a target scope and a hunting scope.

That's a pretty good poke for a coyote, i gather you don't call them.  A 6.5-20 with some kind of a hold over reticle.  Reaching up to turn turrets and parallax adjustments is a lot of extra movement that can get you busted.  If your calling in open country a 2.5-10 or 4-16.  I find that when calling I have many more shots under 100 yards than over 300 and most of my rifles have 1.5-6's on them.  I do have one rifle a 22-250 set up for long range with a 2.5-10 on it but my longest coyote in open country is only 40 yards with a couple more closer, I rarely take it out any more.

A vx2 4-12 or 6-18 with cds depening on your preference would do you well. I think I have 4 right now in that range and they do extremely well.

Works well when those 500 yard coyotes aren't trotting in a blowing wind or engaged in the process of becoming 1000 yard coyotes.

I call all of my coyotes in.   I shoot an AR with a 3 power red dot type sight on it.  I pass on most coyotes over a hundred yards.  I have had plenty of coyotes in the 200-500 range just hold up for various reasons.  i don't take unnecessary shots because I don't want to educate them.  Just looking to try something different.

That's when you've got the backup guy with the 300 win mag setup for those 1,000 yard shots! lol

Unless you plan to carry two rifles something like a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x40 or 50 with the DOA 600 reticle would make a great one gun calling scope.  With a 40" FOV on the bottom end(2.5x) would make it more than handy for close in dogs and 16x and the DOA600 reticle would make 500 yard shots more than doable.  You always have time to turn a scope up in power but rarely have time to turn it down, I keep mine on the lowest power even in wide open spaces, sometimes it can be amazing how a coyote can appear out of nowhere even in the most open terrain.  I find that at least a 40' FOV to work well on called coyotes and much prefer 60' or more on the bottom end.

I put a Zeiss HD5 5-25x50 on my 22-250.  They're not a super high end scope but it's a good solid scope, mine has the RZ 800 reticle.
