I've wanted to hunt utah for a number of years and am wondering if I can get any tips on what tags are good for deer, elk, and antelope. Also wondering if anyone can give me some tips on hunting out in that country.

That's way to big of a question. I would suggest you do a little research about harvests, game unit locations and general lay of the land and then decide which species you'd like to concentrate on first.  Utah has a very diverse geography, everything from high wilderness hunts to dry desert hunts. Just like in Wash., a unit that is terrible to one hunter is great to another-depending on scouting and overall knowledge of the area.  Once you refine it a bit, your question might be easier to handle and help you with.

There are places you can hunt every year, places you may hunt once in a lifetime and places youll never hunt.    The point game is alive and well there and as a non resident I assume, its already stacked against you.   There are land owner or voucher options too.   Youll have to come up with a goal and that will narrow down your question.

The best thing you can do is pick an area and get to know it. That’s what we did, Utah’s dwr biologist also are a good resource.

to apply, even to just build points, you must first purchase a hunting license.  In my opinion, since you are already into it the cost of a hunting license you may as wellapply for deer as well.  The application fee is almost nothing so may as well.

Just an FYI; a Utah license is good from one year of purchase date. So buy your license after the application for Utah is open and then you can use that same license the following year to apply. You would only need to purchase a new hunting license if you drew a tag or planned to hunt there that year.

No, don’t buy a license now in your situation. Unless you are planning to apply for antlerless tags for this fall. The most you can get out of it now is next years applications only. Wait until next February, then you can apply, and possibly hunt with it, and if you time it right, get 2 years worth of applications out of it.

Buying one now means it would expire at this time next year.
