Fire risks are at "historic levels," San Juan National Forest Fire Staff Officer Richard Bustamante said, adding, "Under current conditions, one abandoned campfire or spark could cause a catastrophic wildfire, and we are not willing to take that chance with the natural and cultural resources under our protection and care, or with human life and property."

The San Juan National Forest makes up some 1.8 million acres across nine counties. The full closure, which the Associated Press reports last took place in 2002, does not affect roads that cross through the forest.

No surprise, the Feds and BLM haven't managed the forest for decades now thank to environmentalist and the USFS employee's Union!  This next generation will not have a clue how to properly take care of nature no matter how educated they believe themselves to be.

I get that the environmentalist getting in the way for government agencies to manage land but how does the USFS have anything to do with it?  Just wondering

USFS gets hamstrung quite often when they try to put through timber harvests due to public input/ outcry. A lot of time they get sued, which ties up a bunch of budget/time in legal fees and court costs. USFS is a much easier target to go after for those folks than private timber or even state agencies.

Not sure how the environmentalist mind works.....same minds as most liberals I guess, so no logic.   I can see Washington following suit. Sorry National Forest closed this year.....

The San Juan NF is an amazing forest. Literally every time I've driven through I've seen deer, elk, and bear. But, when it burns, it burns. The four-corners region has had several really bad drought years the past decade or so and that doesn't help the fire activity.

On another forum I frequent guys from the SW have been talking about how dry it is. Sounds like another dust bowl in the making.
Talk of dead deer and elk from lack of water.

I see white river national forest already put some extreme restrictions in effect. Nuts to see some of those areas burning but a few of us put our money this past winter on CO and NM the place to go this summer.


Just wait until next month when the west dries out. Hopefully I won't be seeing 14+ columns everyday.
