Targeted Species
« on: June 14, 2018, 06:37:29 PM »
Here's a newbie question coming from a newbie.  This is going to be my first year trapping.  Past the test already and getting excited.  I've read about western Washington either not having very many or none at all on some species of fur bearers.  My question is exactly what species to target around the Grays Harbor area.  Should I target beaver, bobcat, and racoon?  Are muskrat and mink even worth the effort?  Like I said, I'm a newbie. lol

The reward of trapping lies in the success learning to catch animals and deciphering their habits. Good luck it is addicting.

Trapping is just another form of hunting
Go scouting, hang bait and cameras go travel the swamps looking for sign!!!
For me my favorite are cats and marten ! My pre season scouting and putting baits with cameras on them is almost as good as catching em
Go have fun

A fellow GH guy here, my take on it.
For the most part GH has always been about water animals specifically beaver, otter and to a lesser extent mink. Price sucks on them now but it is what we have. I write off rats. You will get a few incidentally but tough to find anyplace with much of a population. We do have coons but right now practically unsaleable so I'm not fooling with them unless I get paid.
Bobcats are cool to trap and I would include them but we really have a poor cat so don't expect to do bank.
For me I have a niche market for civets so that is my main quarry.
You really have to be trapping for the love of it now so if I was starting out it would be beaver, otter, cats maybe mink.

Thanks gor the advice guys.  I'm not in it for the money.  It's something that I've wanted to do since I was younger.  I figured since I got kids I might as well get off my butt and get to it so that I can show my kids how to.  Lol.
