Headspace on my 6.5x284 build ??
« on: June 16, 2018, 01:34:30 PM »
So I installed my new barrel on a stagger feed savage. I used a full length resized piece of brass to set my headspace. My reasoning behind this was in my factory long range hunter 6.5x284 I was really long to the lans. I want to minimize headspace to preserve brass and be able to chase the lans a little. One piece of tape on the head of the brass and bolt doesn't close. Good to go for a no go guage. Being paranoid as this is my first build I went ahead and ordered a forster headspace guage set. Bolt does not close on the go guage and measuring with headspace guage shows that ther is a .002 difference between the brass I used to head pace and the forster headspace guage. I will only ever be using handloaded so no worry about short chamber for factory ammo. Does it sound reasonable that I'm good or ?? Any advice? I have been researching this project for over a year and there is a split opinion over always using a Sami go guage over s slightly tighter chamber to improve case life and accuracy as well as allowing to chase the lans. Thanks

I'd go tight on the go gauge.  :twocents:

For .002 make it fit go gage.  You must of hard fullsized your sample brass vs just bump it a ways Im guessing.

The brass I used was shot in my savage longrange hunter. I full length resized bumping the shoulder back 2 thousandths. I figured the minimally bumped brass would give me a pretty close headspace on my new gun so sharing resized brass could be feasable. Now I'm wondering if it will make much difference since the current chamber is only 2 thousandths under the Sami min.

If you're handloading, no issues. You probably can even shoot most factory rounds. Some guys short chamber to get a crush fit to make sure it is straight in the chamber on the 1st firing.

I have a gun that  is chambered 0.006 short. Works great with handloads and custom dies. I have got the bolt to close on some factory loads.

Thanks Reidus I have read alot but the actual doing and measuring and getting things so that you understand and though I feel like I know I have it right being my first time I am being overly cautious.  Even after I'm done I will being firing first rounds remotely with bags and rest and a very long string. I have to say I have learned more about rifles in one year then my whole life. Putting a rifle together is the next level for me . Hope she shoots well.

What kind of barrel?

chances are it will shoot great with some load development.

tight on the hs won't make much difference on chasing the lands.

It's a douglas 28 inch heavy barrel. I have measured to the lans new rifle is 3.198 savage lrh is 3.240. So I will have an Xtra .042 of bullet in the neck if this rifle prefers the bullet on the lans like the other does. I'm actually worried as my long range hunter barrel eats up the throat that I will have to find a huge jump to maintain accuracy. There is a guy called grey fox on lrh.com that has the same rifle and he is jumping .075.

I’ve jumped as much as .180” with good accuracy (1/2 moa). When you do run out of room chasing then follow the Berger suggested seating depth test and you will most likely find another sweet spot. I’ve had good luck doing this till the landes are too far gone
