Mountain View Antler-less Muzzy
« on: June 22, 2018, 09:02:07 AM »
I'm Going to be "That Guy"

My hunting partner and I drew the Mountain View Muzzle-loader antler-less elk tag. It was a last second add on to our normal hunts, but what we failed to notice was that the muzzy antler-less tag was for only about half of the unit and not the half that is the NF. Of course we didn't catch this until about two weeks ago. Even though we were hoping we wouldn't draw it of course we were selected. We have already started diving in and trying to find any public access land there might be in 1013. We have found the a couple chunks of DNR land and several small plots of BLM land and have started planning a scouting trip. That said I have a few questions.

Is there hunting allowed on Grouse Flats? Looking at old threads it sounds like it is, but I haven't been able to find anything on WDFW that says one way or the other.

Are there any Timber Companies companies down there that allow public access either as walk on or through permits? I saw Bennett Lumber has some land, but I have already contacted them and they informed me there is no public access on their land in Washington at this time.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to where to start looking for other public access?

Thanks for any help that you guys might have. Even though it might be tough to get access we'll still have fun and a good hunt. Worst case we just duck into the NF and chase spikes.

Thanks

Travis

Theres a big chunk of public on grouse flats, has a pond on it. It can be a boring hunt just sitting and waiting , but i know guys who shoot spikes almost yearly out of it. Theres even been some big bulls shot out of it. Theres alot of elk running around on that flat. Just gotta be patient and wait for some to come thru

Thanks for the advice. We will for sure check it out. How big of an area is it? Looking at the maps it doesn't look awfully large. Is it something you can cover the whole thing in a morning or can you slowly hike around doing some glassing?

You can walk the whole thing in an hour or 2.

Think I’d rather sit and be patient .. instead of pushing the elk out

Hopefully you can find some private land access. Or your odds are slim to none. Unless you just on public ground all day and pray something comes by
