Traditional Arrow Weight for Elk
« on: July 01, 2018, 08:28:50 AM »
Ok well my quality draw was a bust this year. So I am thinking of going traditional for a spike or cow elk. I have a 64 pound long bow at 28” draw that I shoot. I am ok at 20 yards. So I am going to put down my training wheels and practice only with the long bow. I am going to challenge myself this year. So the question is.!! What is a good arrow weight for hunting elk with this bow? And where to get some good Arrows’s? I am in the University Place area, but I go to Wenatchee a lot. So if there is a place to get arrows in that vacinity?

Thanks for any info
Jeff

 :yeah:

Start reading TragGang.com and doing some googling.  Lots of info on arrow for traditional.  Comes down to preference and what shoot well for you.  You are customizing your arrows to the bow.  I prefer a higher FOC, not extreme.

If it's a true longbow, you'll want 60-65 spine wood arrows with points up to 150 grains. Over 150 grain points you'll need to jump up to 65-70 spine.

If your bow is a hybrid (reflex-deflex) limbs, then you'll want 65-70 spine with 125 to 150 grain points.

I build custom arrows for quite a few folks and use Surewood douglas fir shafts exclusively.  Pm me if you have questions and I'll try to help.

Looking for what type of shaft, wood or carbon?? When your all said and done your arrow should weigh 600-700gns(broadhead included). Try and get as much of that total weight to the head of the arrow

For the last 20 years I have always shot 9 grains per # with a stick. The crazy thing about a stick bow is the slower the bow is the heavier the arrow needs to be.
