Goose Prairie quality bull tag - thread
« on: June 28, 2018, 10:46:43 AM »
Figured I'd start a little thread and get some other folks opinions on their experiences here...

1) the Old man drew the tag this year for archery

2) We've hunted the nile on and off for many years and camp in the midst of great elk country. I haven't heard a bugle in there before sept. 20th in a long time.  However at the same time they're screaming their heads off in the bumping and little naches just north of us.

Anyone else experience what I'm talking about off the 1600 and 1700 line?  that week in-between archery and muzzle loader is typically when they fire off in there and in to muzzle loader...There are some monster bull in the canyon we hunt every year, but it's a sit and wait type of deal the first half of sept in my experience (no rutting activity and loud walking)

With that said, being that it took 13 points to draw, we want a quality rutt hunt and to chase screaming bulls so are considering going in to the bumping unit hoping they're in rutt earlier.

anyone have insight?

I had the rifle bull tag a couple years ago. Shoot me a pm, I’d be happy to chat.

Bench helped me out with my tag as well. He is a good guy willing to give straight forward advice.

The bumping is a huge unit! stretching from tipsoo lake to the north and hwy 12/ rimrock lake to the south and the nile and little naches (hwy 410 border.) to the east. I'm sure every corner of this unit hold elk, but all be damned that is too much ground to really scout and see a lot of it.

any pm's or thoughts from guys who have hunted it would be appreciated.  congrats to other hunters who got the tag.

Like everyone else said, hunt the Bumping. I had the tag a few years ago and found good bulls everywhere I went in the Bumping. Just pick a trailhead and go in. Don't go as far as the outfitters but get away from the road hunters and you'll find elk. If you can put your camp on your back and go in 2-3 miles you'll have action.:twocents:

Happy to share info, just PM me.  I had the general bull tag for firearm season last year and scouted about 8 trips in Bumping through the months of Sept and October.  Had cameras up in numerous places with some nice bulls found.
