Thinking about increasing the weight of my broadhead
« on: July 01, 2018, 08:44:37 PM »
I am thinking about increasing the weight of my broadhead from 150 gr to 190 gr. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

I shoot an older 50# bear recurve and also a 40# Sage take down recurve and was thinking the added weight might help the arrow fly truer, maybe?

Is there a way to calculate the affect it will have on the arrow flight or do you just have to try it and see what happens?

Man... that is a pretty loaded question. I think if your arrow spine is stiff enough you should be okay to try it. You can read a lot into FOC and such, but you need a stiff enough arrow to handle more weight up front.

Quick test: Make two identical arrows, one with your current 150 grain head and another with 190 grain head of your chioce. Take several careful, intentional shots with each arrow. Be really sure to use the same grip, anchor point and aim. If both arrows hit the same spot you are good to go.

If your arrows are a bit weak spine, or even spot on correct spine for the 150 grain heads they will probably impact to the right with 190 grain. (Excessively stiff shafts will impact left of point of aim, weak shafts impact to the right). Target tip arrows will probably impact the same spot - broadheads WILL be more sensitive.

Depending on how much extra length you have past the riser at full draw you can stiffen the current shaft by cutting it shorter. (Shorter shaft is stiffer than the same shaft in longer length).

This. Its a bit of a loaded question.  A lot of it depends on the spine of your arrow and whether or not your arrow is stiff enough to handle the additional weight up front.  Adding more weight up front will weaken your spine which could throw off your accuracy and grouping.  I am no expert but there is a lot to consider before increasing point weight.  Would be a fun experiment to shoot the 150s and 190s side by side though to see the results.
