Is this a new thing?  I don't remember seeing it last year.  Then again, I only get a bear tag just incase I see one while out hunting other things.  This year I plan on trying to actually go after a bear.

Black bear identification test required in GMUs 101, 105, 108, 111, 113, 117, 203, 204, 209, 215, 418, 426. Pg. 70 of regs

You have to pass with an 80% or higher.  I'm not a bear hunter, but I just took mine and passed it with no issues.  You can find it when you sign into the WDFW wild system under Mandatory Species Identification Tests.  Its just 10 questions and only takes a couple minutes.

Kind of odd they didn't add more GMUs. There was a verified grizzly sighting in 224 last year. And there have been verified sightings in 437, 450 and 448.

It took a few minutes to find the information on WDFW website but it says the test will be available July 1st. I can't find it. Is there a link somewhere I'm not finding. Thanks

when did the training become mandatory?  I may have bought my licenses before the bear test was mandatory, I seen it on there but I think it was voluntary still.  I'm hoping next year it'll be printed on hunting license as an endorsement. Actually, I think they should do that now and give us all a free license reprint showing the bear ID endorsement.  Might be asking too much though, I can't even get a license where the ink shows up for more than a month or two they're so faded already, and they ain't even being getting used yet!

Gonna have to start packing a brief case with me in the woods when I'm huntin

@KFhunter  It's not mandatory to get your license. It's mandatory to have the paper saying you took the class/test with you if you're bear hunting in those listed GMU's.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Thanks,  I took the test and got the cert.  Going to put it on the copier and reduce it down to a manageable size and tuck it in my tag holder.

How about no more new laws, if someone makes a mistake, they pay the price. So tired of all the new ways we can get nailed... When I see others pushing for this, well... I'll just say to each his own(guess that's the politically correct way to put it!). I am not an advocate of more rules and more laws, can't enforce the ones they have now. How about we each be responsible, if not pay the price.....

I completely agree with requiring the training to keep hunters from accidentally shooting a grizzly, I've advocated years for this. But, I had missed the part that you must carry proof of passing. How stupid is that, this is the digital age, the endorsement should show on your license. Any warden can easily look at your online profile and check too, or hasn't WDFW figured out how to do that?

One more reason to be disgusted with WDFW, they can't do anything the smart and easy way!  :bash:
No money to be gained in that, make the requirement hard, easy to forget, bam tickets and money in the coffers. :twocents:
Coffers of the county...

Just another case of wdfw suppressing predator hunters.
