Wow!  That's a lot on the alternate list.  My buddy is #30 and I'm #89 on the Big Game combo list.  Do you think we have a chance?  Does anyone know at around what number you draw that you are pretty much guaranteed a tag???  I know it depends on how many people that did draw and have hardships but with 17,000 big game combo's I would imagine the first 100 on the list get tags?  Or am I way off base?  I have no clue.

Very few for the deer combo.
Maybe a 100 for the big game combo.

I think 3% of 17,000 is 510 not 850.  But lets still hope for the best!  And yes, I will and I hope everyone else too, will post if they get the call.  Is that how they notify you or is it through the mail?

Mail.  They send you a letter an application.  The letter will say something like we have 30 tags.  We sent this out to the top 50 people on the list.  You have until this date to get the application back to us.

 Typically 200 ish are returned for deer/elk. 100 ish for deer. At 456 I have virtually no chance. I've gotten tags every time I've needed to through the alternates list when the sign up was first come first served. They ruined it for the serious hunter by going to the random draw. My hope is none of us get any tags through the list this year.

Hard to understand your last sentence.  You say 200ish for deer/elk and 100sh for deer.  You drew number 456 and because of this you hope nobody gets a tag?  So I ask you, if you had drawn #10 in the drawing instead of #456 would you hope that you not get a tag?  Or better yet, if you hope nobody gets drawn, why did you even enter your name in the alternate drawing?  Maybe I'm missing the thought process behind your statement that "My hope is none of us get any tags through the list this year".

My thinking is that anyone who asks for a refund must have come into some sort of hardship. I don't want to hope for that. Now if they drew too many tags, won the lottery.....  Then I'd be happy to get their tag! :tup:

So let me ask you all this question, What does it take to be able to return your license and tag after you were successful in the draw?  Death, injury, major life crisis???  Can you return it because you just decided not to go?  I'm just wondering...

I will answer my own question.  I just found this on the Web page.

2.3.402 LICENSE REFUNDS
(1) No refund will be issued for any hunting, fishing, or trapping license sold by
the department except as provided in (1)(a) through (e) of this rule. The department
will review all applicable information in evaluating requests:
(a) a surviving heir may receive a refund if the license holder dies and has not
used the license. A license holder may receive a 90% refund if an immediate family
member dies and the license holder has not used the license. A request for such
refund must be accompanied by appropriate supporting documentation which
includes, at a minimum, a copy of the death certificate of the license holder or
immediate family member. For a hunting license, the request must be postmarked
by the end of that calendar year;
(b) license holders may receive a 90% refund in the event that a medical
emergency prevents the license holder from using the license. A request for a
medical emergency refund must be accompanied by appropriate supporting
documentation which includes, at a minimum, a statement signed by a licensed
physician. The physician must describe the nature of the medical emergency and
state why it precludes using the license. For a hunting license, the request must be
postmarked by the end of the calendar year;
(c) a resident who has purchased a conservation, bear, deer, elk, bird, or fishing
license may request a refund by returning the license to the Helena or regional office
at the time of application for a combination license. A resident who purchases a twoday
fishing license may request a refund by returning the license to the Helena or
regional office at the time of application for a season fishing license. A nonresident
who has purchased a conservation, season bird, season fishing or deer license may
request a refund by returning the license to the Helena office at the time of
application for a nonresident big game combination license. A nonresident who has
purchased a conservation, season bird or season fishing license may request a
refund by returning the license to the Helena office at the time of application for a
nonresident deer or elk only combination license;
(d) if an applicant is issued an incorrect license (e.g., a sportsman over 62 years
old is issued a regular conservation license and elk license for full price instead of
the half price elk license) through the fault of the department or a license agent, the
license fees will be refunded;
(e) except for refunds under (1)(a), (b), and (c), nonresident combination license
holders may receive a license refund according to the following schedule, provided
the nonresident certifies that the license was not used:
(i) 80% refund if postmarked on or before August 1 of the license year;
(ii) 50% refund if postmarked after August 1 of the license year, but on or before
the general big game hunting season with the following exceptions:
(A) if the license holder is outfitter sponsored and lack of success in drawing a
permit eliminates opportunity to use the license, the amount retained by the agency
will be $100, provided that the request is postmarked on, or prior to, October 1;
(B) if the license holder is landowner sponsored and lack of success in drawing a
permit eliminates opportunity to use the license, the amount retained by the agency
will be $50, provided the request is postmarked on, or prior to, October 1;
(iii) no refund will be issued after the opening of the general big game hunting
season;
(f) for the purpose of considering refunds, any license ordered by mail shall be
considered sold when the department receives a valid application;
(g) the director, or his designee, may authorize exceptions to the refund policy

due to extenuating circumstances including but not limited to the following:

(ii) catastrophic or major natural disaster or man-made event that necessitates
the assistance from state or federal emergency management agency.

So it looks like anyone can get an 80% refund for any reason if they apply for it before August 1st and a 50% refund if they apply for it after August 1st.  No refunds allowed after the big game season opens. (look at Sec e above)

Talked to the lady in the Helena office today.  She said they usually get 200-300 big game combo's back each year.

I told you all that if I heard any news I would let you know.  Me (draw #89) and my Buddy (draw #30) got letters last week offering us Deer and Elk combo alternant licenses.  We have until August 13th to respond and send in our applications and $1036.00 to get the license.  I sent mine in today and my buddy will be doing the same.  Good luck to all of you on the alternant list!!!

I was told by the lisc office that even in a good economy they will get between 250/300 deer tags returned, I can’t remeber how many Deer/Elk combos she said are returned  :dunno:

So me and my buddy both got deer/elk combo licenses off of the alternant list.  It shows that I am now #-35 on the list.  I was #89.  So it looks like the first 124 people on the list have been given licenses.  I don't think they are done either.
