Filtering nasty water?

Experiences anyone? Looks like scuzzy cow ponds might be my only option. hopefully I can find a cleaner source but I'd like to be prepared for the worst. Thinking pre filter, filter, then treat with tablets. Boiling probably isn't really an option.

You'll never get that taste out of it...trust me.  Then your filter is nasty too.

Bring crystal light or Mio to make it taste a bit better once it's filtered at least.

Nothing wrong with trying that but trust me, it doesn't do much...then it just tastes like cow shizz with mio in it 

No possible rock seeps or drips?  Depending on where you're at, water can be found in rocks

  I have drank some nasty water before, when it was a must. Then tossed the filter after, can never get the taste out.


My buddy insisted them was no reason to filter the water and called me a few names for being scared.

Last year I got my water by melting snow and ice with a small fire fed by old sage  wood.  As bad as that water tasted (a la burning garbage), I comforted myself by reminding myself that it wasn't as bad as the time I "filtered" water out of a cow wallow.

I also pack water flavoring packets.  It doesn't make it taste great, but it's better than nothing.  A life straw and tablets don't cost much.  Use them then throw them away.  Beats crapping water while you're trying to hunt.

Just pick up an inexpensive filter and pre-filter with some type of strainer or coffee filters.  The Sawyer or newer Katadyn Be Free work awesome and cheaper than a tank of gas.

It sucks all the way around. Strain, filter, boil, flavor packets, and it still tastes like cow pie.

I like this idea i'll probably pack in a bunch more water than I normally would too.  The crystal light concentrate in the squeeze bottle is pretty handy too.

If its as bad as you say it is, I would do some pre-scouting and haul in 3 gallons of water each time and stash it for season. 1 gallon of water weighs roughly 8.5 lbs. Do some training and get a stash going. Depending on how many people and how long youll be there 6 gallons of water can go a long way.
