I do love wool and synthetic base layers(smart wool, kuiu, UA), but the problem is the mosquitoes can eat right through them. Something like a loose fitting exoffico style shirt is the best way to go. And the collar helps as well. Deet!!!

You're not wrong.  Permethrin or picaridin work pretty well to keep bugs away from your baselayers, though. 

I just ordered a Columbia Omnishade long sleeve, inspired by this thread; i'll let y'all know how it performs.

I use Columbia Omni-shade as well.
Worked fantastic on our Vietnam/Cambodia trip last January.

Tackle Warehouse makes a long sleeve sun shirt that is pretty affordable.  It is a UPF 50 I believe.  They have frequent sales as well.

used this during turkey season this year in hot weather.  worn it on a few sunny day hikes.  excellent sun protection and keep cool even with the hood up.  dries fast.
