Egg fishing in anti snag rule area question
« on: September 12, 2018, 08:36:46 PM »
What are your thoughts. While fishing eggs for salmon where anti snag rule is in effect is it safe  to use Beau macs weighted cheaters at your eggs to keep them in the strike zone? This is part of a lure bait combo, but does the rule outlaw this approach while this is a question that seems to be unclear.

if i remember correctly, i think your weight can't be "attached" less than 12" from your hook.  what's weird, is that using a jig is perfectly legal, as it's part of the lure.

me, i'd just simplify things and use a short leader.

in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

That is correct. But is that considered a weight In this situation? Or part of a lure egg combo.
If so I always here the term eggs are nutral boyant so would eggs fall under the non boyant part of the anti snag rule?

It’s a good question.
I think if it slides on your line, then it would not be legal. If it stays attached to the bait then it might be, but probably up to the game wardens interpretation.

The weight just has to be at least 12” from whatever bait you are using.

On a side note, throwing a gob of weightless eggs can be a very effective tactic. Learned it years ago and have almost never seen it used.

Obviously the current and depth need to be appropriate, and you need to use a spinning rod with light enough line to cast. Also a big enough cluster of eggs. It can be money when other presentations are problematic.

Not needed. Also reduces and obstructs hook gap.

I agree not needed.  If you are fishing somewhere that you need additional weight on your leader, either fish a shorter leader or add split shot.

I could not agree more Bullkllr, add the weight of a water filled Bubble Bobber and you can toss it upstream in the river to those rising Kings.....deadly!

NO!
You may not have weight within 12" of the bait.
