21 seconds in the life of a spooked heifer that is not quite sure she can make it on her own.

I bet she rolled in soft dirt, just like a horse getting rid of bugs and cleaning her hide

I bet she rolled in soft dirt, just like a horse getting rid of bugs and cleaning her hide

thats  a pretty good and reasonable explanation !

the next day after i saw this series of pics i immediately walked back to take a look around.  she for sure was never on the ground. the vegetation was wasn't broken or flattened at all. all i could see was one spot where some turf was kicked up by a hoof.  dirt in the road is hard as a rock.  the time frame while she gives bit of an illusion of being on the ground takes place in a second or 2 .

i'm wondering if that blackish blob in the road in the 2nd pic  and behind her in pic 3 one second later is a young bear.  there is/was a sow with 2 of last years cubs hanging around there. 1 black, 1 light brown/blondish.  neighbor recently stated he thought he saw a wolf.  that same spot i do get lion, bobcat ,bear and yote pics.   wish i woulda had the cam in video mode.

my best theory at this point is that it was that little black bear hiding in the brush and ran out and scared her ( maybe took a swipe at her ) and quickly exited.  i just  :dunno:

she hung out for a while for maybe 25 more pics including the standard stick your face in front of the cam pic.  :chuckle:

I think that blackish blob is just a trick of the light. You can see the outline of your blob in the other pics so I don't think it is anything not in the other pics.
To me she never looks like she lays down.

Dust cloud kicked up by hooves. Full cloud in 2nd pic, cloud dispersing in 3rd pic.

I re looked, your right.  I thought the black blob was her neck and head in the dirt, nope something spooked her and she turned and burned.

Pretty simple.  Your camera spooked her.

sorry i haven't gotten back.  walked up and took some pics with my cam in daylight for a better perspective but having no luck getting them to upload.

i'll post some game cam pics during daylight to help out. some  pics  predator  for comparison.

for sure no dust cloud. ground is hard packed and covered in pine straw.  without snow it's rare to even see a track from moose or elk after a rain.

if you click on the pics quickly for some animation it makes more sense as to see an animal nipping at her hooves.  u would have to download them to do this.

i suspect it's one of those 2 young bears dashing across the road.   bigger bear just for daylight comparison close to the spot she was in.

To me she never looks like she lays down.

lighting sure does play a big part , but at night that shouldn't be an issue.

i can sure see the outline, but the dark blob moves from that spot to behind her under the brush and then disappears in the last pic.

:dunno: but it sure makes me  :chuckle: trying to figure game pics out sometimes.  last winter i got a pic of 2 whiteys running in warp speed at that same spot but a different cam angle. i knew something was up and expected something chasing in the following pics.  got a pic of what looked like a yote or maybe a wolf snout at the edge of the pic.  after blowing it up and much studying i figgered out it was the inside edge of a whiteys hind leg.  :chuckle: i think it was a 2 minute difference .  deer don't run like that for nothing at that time of year. another  :dunno:
