Wonder Mountain Wilderness?
« on: July 26, 2018, 05:01:51 PM »
Anyone have any experience with this area? A friend of mine from the Marine Corps that I haven't seen since my wedding wants to come out and do a hunt in September next year. He's really hooked on trying out a backcountry hunt so I figured high-buck would give us a good opportunity on either a deer or bear. I understand it's a pretty rough area with no trails but has some decent sub-apline ponds and a few meadows according to Google Earth and what I've gathered off of hiking websites. I guess I have a two part question -

Have you been there? And if so, would you recommend giving it a shot?

If not, why?

I've also had my eye on Mildred lakes and a few meadows in the Buckhorn wilderness. He hunts quite a bit where he lives in Michigan and has no problem bagging does from his treestand. He is really just looking for a "westeren" expereince with some packs, views, and maybe even some fishing. Im just trying to make sure that he enjoys the expereince even if we dont end up connecting on any game. Thanks for any insight and help you can provide. I'm debating spending this year up there just scouting and hoping to set things up for next year.

I've been in once and it was a number of years ago so take this for what it is worth.

There is a small amount of open ground which to my mind was not that rough but getting a deer out would be a job. The lake is border line frog pond. Nice but I can't believe it would rate very high for fishing. Water was clear as a bell and I could see every fish and there weren't many. Saw a lot of grouse, incredible blueberry picking (Oh they were good) but not one deer or track of same, saw one bear. I was there last couple days of August.
Nice place for a couple days hiking and camping but I never went back for deer.
At that time it wasn't too far to hike in from the west side. Lot of road decommissioning has changed that.

A wise man once told me that 90% of the country your hunting will hold 10% of the deer and 10% of the country will hold 90% of the deer.  He was right.  keep looking don't give up! A copper johnny is your high lake huckelberry...  :)
